Thankyou for the advice, I attach a copy of the results. As my nick suggests, I'm no racer in this sort of thing, but I would like to resolve this without a format. The computer is connected to the internet some applications work OK. P2P, fetches my email but I can't read it as neither FifeFox or IE will connect.

Is there some reason why the local host loopback address is showing up where the DNS server IP's should be?

Are you typing 127.0.0.1 into the IPv4 DNS property settings for some reason?

I should be seeing a proper DNS address show up there like Google at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Many thanks for your time and trouble.
I found that the address was 127.0.0.1 I have hooked off for them to be assigned automatically, afraid that didn't help.
I'm wondering if the router that I am using needs to be reset. I have not made any changes prior to this
I have to take a rest for a couple of days as my dance card is quite full. Back again in a couple of days or so.
    Thanks again. O2OF

    Problem solved!!

    Couldn't leave things alone. :)

Many thanks for all your help. I think that the router was causing the problem. After allowing automatic dns address seeking, then a delayed restart, modem/router/PC all is well.
    Thanks again.

Hi everyone, I have a DNS error, sometimes with the message: "your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding".

I am not using a regular modem, I am using some kind of USB connection device with a chip in where the internet comes through the air, there is no cable connection to the house, and the internet is associated with the house. It is a specific compatability problem with one laptop/notebook.

I have already spent about 10 hours trying various solutions and speaking to the company's staff, so I am getting pretty desperate. I would like to post the IP config all report below incase anyone can use that to make an suggestion. Thanks.

Huawei - mobile broadband is the USB broadband thing with no compatibility with the laptop. That's the one. Obviously, I am on a different laptop at the moment. Thanks for any help.

The 2 computers that are connected successfully to the internet do NOT have selected "obtain an IP automatically" and "obtain DNS server address automatically".
Instead they have selected "use the following IP address" and "use the following DNS server address".
Below these the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway options and DNS server options are all left blank.
In the computer that is NOT connected to the internet, I tried to replicate this as a possible solution, but it won't let me. It says I have to have an IP address.

Today I purchased 3 more USB/dongle type devices and none of them work with my computer, but they all work with another computer. So the problem is one of compatibility with all such devices, not just with the one specific device.

I can connect my computer to a wireless network arriving by cable to the house. When I visit someone else's house that is. But not with my main computer at my main home which doesn't have such a network because there is no cable to the house.
