Password protect shared files on network containing XP & Win 7 PC's

Any idea on how to do the following?
I have a Windows7 Professional 64bit PC on a network. I have some simple back-up software installed that will run scheduled backups, and it will also backup shared files on the network (network contains XP and Win7 PC's). All i want to do is have each computer on the network share the My Documents folder, but also have the folder (or PC) password protected on the network. I only want the backup PC to have access to the shared folders. This way, employees won't have to do anything but use the My Documents folder and their data will be backed-up daily and private to others on the network.

This sounds so simple, but i've ran into a bunch of problems. Actually, I was able to get the XP PC's to work by creating a password on the guest account and keeping the account turned off. It works great. I get a prompt for a username and password from any PC i try to connect to it from. But Windows 7 PC's are not giving me the Username and password promt. So when i set the network options to password protect, it just tells me i do not have permission or whatever. I know using a server role is the better/real way to do something like this. But just for spits n giggles, can this be done?

Hi Triago, Welcome to Seven Forums.

For other pc's to be able to connect to a Win7 pc, this has to be done.

Have you tried turning on password protected sharing under Advanced Sharing options?

You need to have a password set up on those machines for it to work.

Are you using an Admin account in Windows 7 to make those changes to the Network options?

You might also need to create a non Admin account on the Windows 7 machines for the file restrictions to work.

Share Permissions and NTFS Permissions combine to give you the effective permissions.

Yes: to advanced sharing options
Yes: to have passwords on the Machines
    Yes: to using admin account.
Yes: to created non- admin acount.

Its just silly. SOme times it prompts for a password, sometimes it just says you do not have permission. Sometimes it shows the PC's in the workgroup, sometimes it doesn't. WHat a mess. WIn7 really dropped the ball on this one.

So you did not create a Home group for this mixed Op system network?

I have created a home group. But i cant seem to get any solid password protection down. For instance, I share a file on the homegroup from one one PC and set permissions. then i got to another PC and join the group and its like the permisions were never there...full access to shaed file. then i go to another PC and i can't access it or put in a password. I need to do more research on this.

In that case you will want to leave the Home group from all of your Windows 7 machines.

Home groups is not made to work with older versions of Windows and will cause problems in a mixed Op system network.

You should set up a normal Work group type Network and use the same Work group name for all machines in your network. :)
