    Quick VPN setup check

    Hi guys

Im looking at just testing out how a VPN works, a quick overview is i have a vista laptop and a windows 7 desktop along with a billion 7800n router. Both the laptop and desktop have static lan ip address asaigned to them. I would like to dial into my desktop machine from my laptop.

I have setup my desktop to recieve in coming connections but when i am setting up the laptop to allow outgoing connections im a little bit unsure on one aspect. When it asks for the internet address i want to connect to which is my desktop machine, do i have to type in the lan address of that machine or do i have to put in the wan address?

I have followed the help guide on the forum but i was still a little confused. I just need to setup my router as well to allow pptp connections but that should be pretty straight forward hopefully

    Hope you can help

    Liam

We have some tutorials on this here. It looks like they are using a User name and LAN address to me. There is some info on the required router settings at the bottom of the outgoing VPN page.

Thanks for that matey, i have had a good read through the guides. I thought they were using the lan address for the machine they want to vpn to so for example mine would be 192.168.1.101 which is my desktop. But the thing i dont quite understand is if im say at work how would i be able to dial into a lan ip address? Surley i would need a wan address in there somewhere as it wouldn't know where to go?

    thanks again mate

I was wondering about that also because it seems like you would need to use the WAN address at some point but I don't see them doing that in the tutorials.
