Internet connection priorities?

Hey,

At this moment my PC is wired straight into my modem for internet access. I am however considering plugging it into the router as well in order to access my NAS, enable network printing and what not.

The problem that might be is that the router is also providing internet connectivity and thus I will face the problem of having 2 internet connections open.

Is there some way for me to tell windows 7 to use the "straight" connection over the router one?. Meaning it will use the straight one to connect to the internet and this not pass that traffic through the router etc.?

Any help or advice in regards to this is welcomed :)

You are far better off moving all your internet traffic through the router as it provides an extra layer of security with it's built in firewall.

That migth be. But doing so will also mean a number of the programs I use will have diminished capacity. And yes I have tried with NAT, but even with NAT certain parts of the program wont work correctly.

So that is not an option.

Still looking for a solution to my problem however.

My understanding up to now has been that you can keep two Internet connections running at the same time. Don't both of them run together without causing conflicts?

Once you plug the modem into the router's WAN port you will no longer have the option of using the modem's connection.

If you require a connection outside the router's firewall you can use enable the DMZ host in the router's set up page and connect through that.

They dont cause a conflict per say. But Windows 7 prioritizes the wrong one. It keeps tapping my Routed one as the primary, when I want the other one to be primary.

DMZ is still not good enough for some reason >.<. Dont ask me why. But just to correct you, I can actually switch between both using the modem connection and the router one, with a simple switch of a cable, but I guess it requires an explanation.

My ISP allows me to have 2 WAN IP's. So I got my modem connected straight to a switch. My main computer and the router is connected to that switch, meaning that my computer gets one of the WAN IP's dedicated, while the other one is shared with NAT between my laptop, Printer, Phone etc.

The reason why I "all of a sudden" needs access to the network that is behind my router is because I have gotten access to a NAS, and I want to access that from my main PC as well. That however requires access to the other "network", which brings me to the issue at hand, that I need to prioritize my connections so that the "straight through" one is considered the primary for internet etc.

I hope this explanation might help a bit more with what I am trying to achieve and my reasons behind it all.
