I have a few networked folders I am creating to be viewed by certain members. Now i was curious if i set up the folder as view but not edit and one of the members drops a file in the folder will it allow them to?? AND will the file turn into a read only or full rights to the owner?
If you are the administrator you can give the folders whatever access you want to the others i.e. if you make them read only, obviously they would not be able to add to or edit any of the files in them.
so you are saying if someone with read only privileges trys to drop a file in the folder it wont go?
Correct - as the name implies read means they can only look at the content of the folder, they would not have "write" access to add files or modify anything in the folder (if read-only is the access level you have given them).
BUT if they copy the file to their desktop can they open it and save it out as something else?? I am trying to create a folder of all our shop templates but I dont want them to ever be deleted. They are about 10gb worth of templates over the years.
Suggest you read the following and decide how best it suits your setup (my understanding of a read-only attribute is precisely that i.e you can only read contents and not modify anything including copying to another location....

thats actually different than what I saw in regards to read-only with network file sharing.
