Cannot RDC to remote WHS away from home

Hi guys, First time posting! =)

So I am looking to connect to my WHS 2011 from outside of the home, as I spend a lot of time at college etc.

I've only ever really used RDC at home, So I am unsure as to how to do this from an external location,

My setup at home is this:

    Router --------------------------->Router 2----------------->server
(main in different room) (secondary acting as switch) (running WHS 2011)

So what I have done is set the router a static IP (192.168.0.6)
And forwarded ports on the second router (3389)

And tried connecting from my laptop inside the local network, works fine, Outside at college, it still does not work

Do I need to forward ports on the Main router as well?

Any other help would be great!

    Thanks

Rob, welcome to the windows 7 forums.

My first suggestion would be to take a look at logmein which has a free version. running it on your whs
should let you login from anywhere.

Othwise if you really want to use RDP, you can install the free VPN called hamachi and it will allow you
to access your whs without any port forwarding.

One problem with port 3389 is that port is always scanned by the bad guys to see if they can get into your system from the internet. They scan ip's and port 3389 hoping that someone has not setup the secuiry properly.
With a VPN they can never see your machine.

    http://logmein.com

Free VPN Client: Virtual Networking with LogMeIn Hamachi

They have free version for home use and less than 5 computers for hamachi.

Thank you very much for your help! =)

You'll definitely need to forward the port on your other router as well. Don't use port 3389, one of the first precautions you should take when setting up RDP is to change the default port.

So I installed Hamachi on the server and one of my PC's but it now says the connection was denied because the user account is not authorised for remote login =S

Bydefault administrators can log in from remote but you have the option of
adding other users if you wish.

Glad that you are able to get it working..
