    Internet connection issues

Hello all. I'm new at this, so if I mess up forgive me. I had Vista and just recently upgraded to 7. When I got my wireless adapter to work, I tried to connect to the internet and begin looking for updates. The symbol at the bottom of the screen said networks were availiable, but the instant I clicked on it to connect to the network, the message came up saying that I had no networks availiable or none were detected. I'd troubleshoot and the process would repeat. I had problems when I had Vista also, but it would let me connect, then say it couldn't detect the router or something like that. My computer isn't even 40 feet from the router. And there are no devices that would cause interference. What can I do to fix it. By the way, my friend can sit not even a foot away from me and connect fine on his laptop. Any help will be appreciated. And also be aware that I am not tech savy in any sense of the word. If this helps....

    Computer: Gateway 5220
    OS: Windows 7 (32 bit)
    Router: Linksys
    Adapter: Encore enuwi-g

Have you tried to disable the win firewall?

This is what I had to do to get connectivity.

Several things that you should check: Go to device manager (from search) and make sure there are no drivers that must be updated

Click on the network icon and then go to troubleshoot
As administrator type cmd in search, then after you get that promt type ipconfig. Make sure everything is connectedd.
