Laptop and i Pad won't connect at the same time

Hi, first post here,

I have a new iPad and I cant get it and my laptop to connect wirelessly at the same time. If one is off & I reset the router the other connects fine, to switch I need to reset the router, which is an old WRT54G updated to v1.02.8.(max 50 users) I've gotten 'computers with same ip address' notices, so I reset the modem, router & restarted all the devices one at a time to reestablish ip's to no avail.

FWIW, two desktops and a Verizon network extender are hardwired to the router.

Any ideas on how to sort this out?

Steve

You'll have to determine which of your computers/devices may have a static IP address. On the desktops/laptop (while connected to your network), follow these instructions:

EDIT: Before you do this, I must ask--have you ever had these IP conflicts/issues with the other computers before you got the iPad?
  1. In Start Search, type "cmd" and hit enter.
  2. On the dialog that comes up, type ipconfig /all
  3. Copy and paste the output here.

The Verizon Network Extender is also new, I'm not sure exactly when this started.

I will have to reset the router to get the laptop going....

I'm not sure on how the VNE works, but I have a hunch that it may be acting as a DHCP server, which your router would already be doing which may be causing a conflict. Does the VNE have an administration page that you can access?

Hi SteveZ,

Have you tried removing the extender out of the picture and see if the issue still persist?

In addition, see if assigning Static IP to your laptop and other computers alleviate the issue.

Today everything worked as its supposed to, I reset the modem when everything was on instead of one at a time after reset. I think the problem is when a device wakes. I think I will invent a wireless router reset clicker so I don't have to get out of bed to do it!

FWIW, I updated security from WPA to WPA2, moved to channel 11 , broadcast on G only

For now, even though I didn't do anything to fix it I will mark this issue closed, if I must, I will reopen it.

Also, I have enjoyed browsing this forum and will be a frequent visitor, thank you all for the advice.

How do I connect to Wi-Fi when my laptop can only connect to ethernet?
For some reason, my computer has been only connecting to ethernet recently. However,...
