Internet Speed is dependent on many factors. They are as follows.

    01. What is the band-width that you are paying for and getting from your ISP (BSNL). This is the most important parameter. The band-width is normally stated in kilobits or megabits per second. Your maximum download speed would be one eighth of your band-width in kilobytes per second. Thus if your band-width is 2 mbps you would get a maximum download speed of 256 kilobytes per second.

    02. The above is the ideal speed that you would attain. However there are transmission and hysteresis losses on the way, and you should feel satisfied if you get 80% to 90% of the ideal speed. If you get less than 80% then you should complain to your ISP telephonically and they would reset your profile in their records which shall improve the speed.

    03. There is an excellent free software (donationware) named NetSpeed Monitor (http://www.floriangilles.com/software/netspeedmonitor) that you might like to download and install. It keeps track of your Internet transaction and speed. This gives you an idea about how your band-width is being utilized.

    04. Finally there are download managers that automatically catch anything that you want to download and download for you. Most of them use multiple strands to download files which they claim speeds up the download process if it is not already running near the ideal speed. I don't recommend there use with a broadband connection. But if you are very keen then you may try Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/). One of the best download managers is Download Accelerator Plus Premium (current version 10.0.3.3) but it is not free.

Trust all this is of help to you.
