Why is my network connection so slow?

I dont know if TWC is having problems, if so theyl never admit it. my router is brand spankin new, 802.11n. the modem has since been replaced... but for the life of me, i cannot get a decent download/upload speed.

I Used to get 28-31mb download on speedtest.net. then later it dropped to 17-25, and i said, Ok, thats not bad, not great, but not bad. now im down to .81mb-1.2mb average if im lucky i pull 3 or 4.

my upload speed has always been no higher than 1mb. i am not 100% sure why, im prety sure they do it so i dont run servers, but it still seems a little low IMHO.

I dunno whats going on, i have a bit of network experience, but all software end, nothing hardware end in the way of routers etc, maybe someone knows somthing i dont that can help me fix this. TWC has come out SOOOOO MANNNNYYYY TIMES!!! and thats when it decides to work perfectly, they drive away, it stops working again.

if someone is able to try and help, id like to go back to when i could buffer a 1080p 8min video on youtube or vimeo in a little under a minute

That doesn't look too bad but there are some adjustments you can make to your routers wireless N settings that might help.

Try going into the routers set up page for wireless settings. Find the setting for 802.11n Only and use that. N Only setting means it will only broadcast a wireless N signal but not G or below, so no clients can connect unless they are using wireless N as well. This one setting makes the biggest difference of all.

In most cases it's best to use the 20Mhz setting rather than using channel bonding at 20-40Mhz.

You will want to use WPA2 security with AES encryption for wireless N to work as designed at full speed.

Channel selection can also make a difference. Try using Xirrus wifi inspector for this, if you aren't sure what channel to use post a screen shot of the Xirrus read out.

I Also should have added, im on a wired connection, so this application appears not to work with it

Well... it appears Verizons FiOS has a prety awsome review... if and when it comes to dayton... im gunna be all over that. i just found out i might have sugh low internet connections cuz my bndwith is pretty much in a grab bag for the others using it in my area, so if they are sucking it up, i get lower speeds. I guess FiOS has dedicated bandwith and lots of it.

Yes sharing bandwidth isn't the ideal situation for any connection, seems to be an ISP problem.

well, now that i know that, theres probably little i can do to increase the speed. cant wait for verizon to come back to ohio with the FiOS
