Cable modem for use with Roadrunner??

I guess this is an old question but its been a couple of years.
    tw-Roadrunner rents cable modem for 3 bucks/month -
What device can I buy that will do a good job of this so I don't pay rent forever, if any???

and does it make sense, in the final analysis?

Buy your own for 50 or 60 bucks.

Two common good brands: Motorola and Linksys.

you have a model num? the problem I'm having searching it is the spec: I dunno what time-warner is sending down the line or how its encrypted or not. the makers don't put "Roadrunner-ready" in their specs either.

I have a Motorola SB 5120 and a Linksys CM-100. Both work well.

I don't know if those models are still made, but the brands are OK.

Roadrunner may have a so-called "approved" list of modems, but in reality most any modem should work.

I'd probably call them and see what they recommend and be sure to find out if that means something else would not work at all.

Modems go on sale at times. If you gotta buy it today, maybe you have to pay 80 bucks or so.

I'd check sources besides Amazon, such as Newegg or Tiger Direct if they will ship to your location.

He didn't say anything about free internet. He wants to stop paying in perpetuity the modem rental fee.
