Network Discovery & Printer and File Sharing will not stay on.

I just had a firewall issue. After restoring the firewall and resetting it to default settings, it turns off Network Discovery & Printer and file sharing. If I try to turn them on and save the changes, it doesn't save when I go back in. If I disable the windows firewall, they turn on and my network shared video works. Can someone help me?

Do you still have the predefined rules option in Windows 7 firewall? If those predefined rules were tampered with then you will see this type of problem.

There is a way to fix the problem but it involves editing the registry.

Here is a thread with a similar problem, solution is in the next link.

Chev, you hit the nail on the head. My predefined rules were tampered with, and I couldn't change them. I added the registry entry in the first link and everything started to work again. I appreciate your help!

Good deal NecromanticRuin, that was about the only fix I could find so I'm glad that it worked.

What happened to my "Predefined rules" in Windows Firewall? How can I get them back? - Super User
Old thread but still pertinent. The download in your first link allowed me to restore the SharedAccess registry defaults (including default Firewall Rules) and avoid a reinstall on a friend's W7 computer. Networking is back and all is good.
    Thanks.

I'm glad that you reported back in Tom. This helps other people who find this thread to have confidence in fixing this ongoing problem.

Lately when I see this problem is has to do with the base filtering engine service being corrupted and needs to be repaired. This is usually caused from a virus.

The link below shows you how to fix this never ending problem, it uses the ESET repair utility for this.

Here is the link for the repair utility, please follow directions on this page> I receive the message that my ESET installation ended prematurely - ESET Knowledgebase

Yup, in my case I believe it was a virus that deleted all of the default firewall rules. The Base Filtering Engine service was intact but all of the dozens of default rules were gone. While searching for a solution I've seen many cases where the Base Filtering Engine is missing or corrupted. Your link to ESET's ServicesRepair utility is appreciated. I've downloaded it for my toolbox in case I need it in the future.
    Thanks again.
