Is My Computer ok for WiFi

How can I find out if my computer is ok for WiFi and if it is, how do I turn it on. If it isn't, how can I make it ok?

    Hi,

In order to use wireless connectivity, you need to have a wireless adapter installed. Check under Device Manager to see if one is installed under the Network Adapters section, as shown in the example below.

Thanks for your reply. No, I dont have a wireless connector installed (see screen shot). What can I do about that please, is there a usb plug in or does it have to be a hardware modification??

    Hi,

It can be either, it depends on how much installation you want to do.

This is an example of one which you would plug into the PCI slot inside your PC case:
    D-Link DWA-525 Wireless 150 PCI Adapter [DWA-525] - $19.00 : PC Case Gear

And this is an example of a USB-type one which just plugs into any USB port:
Nano USB Wireless 802.11n Dongle Adapter [NETWIN687N1USBW] - $24.00 : PC Case Gear

Does your router through which you currently connect to the internet support wireless?

Sorry about the delay in replying, been a bit busy.

All I would want to install would be a keyboard and mouse. I want WiFi so I can use it with my Iphone, yes, my BT hub does support a WiFi Connection.

    Ron,

You should be able to get your phone to communicate with the BT hub directly without a wireless adapter connected to your PC. It sounds to me like you want to be able to browse the internet from your phone, but using your BT hub.....is that correct?

Exactly. My daughter is giving me her old Iphone and I want to be able to use it for e-mails, scanning the web and other similar internet tasks. I have a bt wireless hub but no wireless connector in my PC. Not being at all knowledgeable about this topic, I thought I had to have a USB Dongle to be able to use the IPhone, perhaps a laptop and a printer which would be used downstairs in our home.

IT LOOKS TO ME THAT i HAVE GOT THE WRONG END OF THE STICK??
    cHEERS,

    Ron,

Can you supply the exact make and model of the phone? Dinesh is our phone guru, so I'll ask him to have a look at this, but usually todays phones can connect straight to the BT hub and access the internet without any additional equipment (ie. you do not require a wireless adaptor on your PC - the phone operates independent of your PC).

Thanks for that. I will get in touch with my daughteer and ask her for the name of the phone.

Rather ashamed to say this but,,, I am not sure what forum we are using , whether it's "General Discussion" or "Hardware " I need to know so that I can come back on the correct one and not cause problems.

No worries Ron, its not a problem. Just copy & paste this link below in Notepad, save it, then when you are ready to come back to this thread, open the saved Notepad and then copy the link and paste it into the top of the browser and hit enter.
