Brand new laptop (7-HP) wifi gets IP but no LAN/WAN access

    Details...

Brand new Dell Vostro 2420 with 7 Home Premium gets a DHCP address from my Comcast router but I cannot ping the router, DNS/DCHP server or a WAN addresses.

    • All drivers are up to date. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all network drivers
    • I've assigned a static IP, no luck
    • Ran Windows Updates
    • I disabled Windows firewall
    • I have MSE for anti-virus, I disabled that as well
    • System restore isn't an option since the machine is brand new
    • Booted into Safe Mode, problem exists there as well
    • Internet access works fine when connected with an Ethernet cable
    • Wifi adapter is Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n 2.4 GHz

    Time to just reinstall Windows?

Comcast does not supply Routers. They only supply Modems and there is NO WiFi in any Cable Modem. At least that is how it is on my Comcast connection and I supplied my own modem and router.

You need a Real Router with WiFi as what you are doing now is getting a Public IP address from the Modem when the system is Wired to the modem.

So run out and buy a router. While you are out shut the modem down, power it off. When you get back with your WiFi Router connect your PC to it, without connecting it to the modem, and go into the setup system and assign a different Logon password to the main section of the router and then the WiFi section and put in a SSID and password for the WiFi. Once all that is done then connect the router to the modem and power the modem up. The WAN/Internet port of the router will get the Comcast assign Public IP and your PC will get a Private IP address from the routers DHCP server. Whether it is connected by wire or WiFi.

Yes, Comcast offers all-in-one devices. Modem/router/WAP. I've had this network setup for almost a year and several other devices are connected to the wireless network (laptops, media player, smartphones, etc). This is the first device that's had a problem. :)

Then I'd say it may be a setting in the router that is blocking access to the Net from that one computer. This setting may be on just the wireless side or it may be in the Routers main setup section. Something like MAC Filtering or access filtering by IP.

If you Wire that new Dell to the router do you then get a valid IP and can you Ping and browse the Net?

Post the make and model of Modem/Router so I can look at the manual for it.

I went to my neighbor's apartment to test it on another wireless connection and it wouldn't connect there so it's not an issue with the Comcast device. If I connect via Ethernet cable everything works fine.

Well then it is either a poor/bad install of the OS, the WiFi drivers or the card is bad in some way. You could try Reinstalling the drivers from the Dell website or doing a Repair or Clean install of the OS or just contact Dell and get either a replacement or send it back to be fixed. Depending on how you are with tools and who you talk to at Dell they may just send you out a New WiFi card so you can replace it yourself. They have done that for me in the past but that was Years Ago.

Just a thought. Have you turned off the Windows Firewall, and or any other software firewall you may have installed, to see if that allows you to access the net?

It's just very funny it is getting a valid IP address, which means it is seeing and accessing the router/SSID, but can't get to the net.

I'd have to see a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from the problem machine before I trashed the Op system. This sounds like it might be a winsock or TCP/IP problem.

If this is a new laptop I'd have to remove all the bloatware that was preinstalled before I'd do anything else.

I uninstalled most of the bloatware and also tried connecting in Safe Mode.

You might try resetting winsock and the TCP/IP stack.

Winsock entries tells Windows 7 how to access your network services. Additionally, your TCP/IP protocol can be corrupted. The TCP/IP protocol is a stack of 4 layers that includes several transport layers, but when this stack is corrupt you will constantly have connectivity issues.

Run the following two commands one at a time, type them into an elevated command prompt "run as Admin" restart.
netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

If this doesn't work I'd like to see the ipconfig/all. :)

Is this the driver that you are using? If not try installing this driver instead. If there is some sort of connection software involved try it without the connection software and use Windows for the connection instead.
