Red X For Network Connections Even When Connected

Greetings, I am showing not connected (red x) to the Internet even though I am connected. This just started happening a few days ago, up until then I would show the normal connected icon. I read somewhere about deleting data from my Reg Edit, but that was too complicated for me to do. Does anyone have any other solutions to this problem?

Hi dreamliner. When you say you're connected, do you mean your ethernet cable is plugged in ? and can you or cant you access the Internet and move around to various sites as normal?

I am not using a wired connection but rather wireless. And when I say I'm connected I mean I have normal access to the Internet. I can visit any website, send and receive email, etc. etc.

So the only problem is that the icon for my wireless internet connection is showing a Red X on it, as if I were not connected. When I click on that icon with the Red X it shows the correct wireless connection and that I am indeed connected to it. So the problem is that the icon itself is showing that I am not connected when I really am.

Does that help? I really hope to get this problem solved as it is annoying.

Ok, typically the wired connected icon is a screen type icon in your task bar. The wireless icon is different and looks like a bar graph.

You should be able to hide that cable connect icon through the customize task bar options and then check why the wireless connection icon is not showing in the task bar -it may be there but hidden, in which case set it to show.

See how that goes and please report back.

I think you have corrupted icon cache.

OK I'm probably not communicating clearly. What I meant was that the "bar graph" icon, the icon for my wireless connection, is showing a Red X on it, even though I am connected just fine to my wireless network.

I hope I said that right :). Any suggestions?

When I mouse over the icon absolutely nothing happens. If I click on the icon at the very top it says "Not Connected", but below that it shows my wireless connection is indeed connected.

I'll take a look at the tutorial.

There is a tutorial here, personally I never had to perform these steps and would backup my system first in case things could go wrong (or at least ensure I have some form of backout) fortunately you have a working system so can pick a quiet time when you do this.

It could be because both the ethernet and wireless adapters are active.

Open the Network and Sharing Center>change Adapter Settings

Both adapters should appear there. If the LAN Adapter is enabled then disable it and see if that corrects the issue.
