Error: Windows cannot access \\ComputerName... Error 8x0070035

I help network and run some office locations that run two or more computers. One computer is setup as a server with specific software on it, and another or more computers are setup as workstations.

When attempting to connect to a workstation computer in the network I receive the error message:
    Network Error
    Windows cannot access \\ComputerName
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

    Error Code: 0x80070035
The Network path was not found
    Here are some details:
    1. I'm trying to connect to a computer running Windows XP SP3 from a different computer running Windows 7 Pro Sp1 (both machines are 32-bit).
    2. Share folders are setup correctly giving everyone and administrators full access.
    3. I'm trying to connect from an administrative account created with the same name and password on both computers.
    4. Both computers have the same subnet and similar IPs (IE, one IP is 192.168.1.1 and the other is 192.168.1.2).
    5. Both computers are on the same workgroup name.
    6. Enable TCP/IP is setup on the network adapter (versus being "Default").
    7. TCP/IPv6 is disabled
    8. Windows Firewall is disabled on the WinXP computer, and turned off on the Win7 computer.
    9. Computer Browser, Server, SSDP Discovery, and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper services are all set to Automatic startup and started.
    10. Both computers have other software anti-virus/firewall that have been disabled (for testing purposes).
    11. I can browse the shared folder on the Win7 computer from the WinXP computer without problem, and don't get the above error on WinXP.
Other interesting facts are that I can see the WinXP computer when opening the Network browser on the Win7 computer, but I can't see the Win7 computer in the Network Places browser on the WinXP computer. Also, I can edit the HOSTS with the computer names/IPs to stop the above error message, but it's really only a bandaid to this problem.

I have other services that broadcast from the Win7 computer via the network adapters based on the LANA number (which I have correctly setup). These broadcast information and let software on the WinXP computer work correctly. These broadcasts are not getting through as if the LANA number was setup incorrectly, even with the HOSTS file edited.

I would like to find a solution without having to edit the HOSTS file. I've been reading forum post after forum post (google search). What's frustrating is this is not the only environment I have something like this setup (Win7/WinXP mix), but this network is the only one I'm having issues with. I've Looked over every concievable network setting between two identical mixed OS locations and found nothing different. Yet the problem persists. The Win7 computer was just upgraded to Win7 from WinXP Also. The image used to do the upgrade is the same used at another location I compared this computer to.

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Meant to add this to my original post. But, Yes if I type in \\192.168.1.2 from the Win7 computer I can connect (before adding the IP/name in the HOSTS file).

Have you tried adding the credentials from the XP machine to the Windows 7 machines credential list?

    Go to Control Panel
Go to Credential Manager on each Windows 7 machine on the network
Under Windows Credentials, type in the name of each machine, username and password

This link covers more basics for this problem.

The credentials exist for that computer, yes.

I have attempted the PetNetLive KB0000439, but unfortunately it doesn't help resolve the issue.

Something else to note while the HOSTS file has not been edited with the computer name/IP, I cannot ping the WinXP by computername, only it's IP address from the Win7 computer.

There are a few other things that can cause this problem.

Are you running Norton on any of these machines? If not which A/V software are you running?

Can you post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from these two machines?

I have the same problem. I tried the solution from this page, this page and this page. None of them work, I disabled Norton A/V, it continues not to work. One thing I omitted, it a SubNet, is it needed between Win7 & Win8 ?

    Yes a subnet is needed.

In addition to the original post.

    Click start orb.
    in search type. Services
Browse through them and Make sure the Computer Browser Service is both enabled and running.

If it is continue to next step. If its not enable it and test.

On both the source and target machine, make sure NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled

    Open network and sharing center.
on the left side choose change adapter settings.

Right click on you adapter in use. Choose properties

Find the ipv4, select it and choose properties. Then choose advanced.
then navigate to the WIN tab. Choose. Enable netbios over tcp/ip.

If this set as default change it back if its still not working.

Finally if its still not working.

    open an elevated command prompt

    Click start orb.
    Type cmd
Right click on cmd choose run as administrator.
    Once open type.

    netsh winsock reset

    netsh int ip reset c:\temp\resetlog.txt

Reboot and let us know if it worked.

If it's anything to do with Norton you will need to uninstall Norton with it's own removal tool.
