Windows 7: Best way to utilze VPN???

There is a balance you must make in what's important and what's critical.
Yes, and there's also implementing best security practices to avoid being liable (or at least lessen the liability by making someone else to be liable) for a breach in a court of law too. Sometimes it's smart to do all you can to be secure.

Yes, I use it often to connect into my work network when I'm not in the office.

It's been said several times, yet you continue to ignore the explanations. a VPN is not used to protect your computer or your web-surfing. If you are interested in securing your own computer, especially when using the internet, forget about VPNs and start asking questions related to that. A VPN is a transpot, as mentioned above, connecting you to another network from the outside. It has nothing to do with security and protecting an individual computer.

I was not interested in discussing whether or not I should use VPN... I was just wanting to learn more about VPN. There are some aspects concerning "Why" that I cannot discuss publicly.

I already found some good info for this, thanks.

I can only speak for myself, but I cannot read minds or thoughts. Going on your postings, a VPN is not the answer. Unless you had a school or company to connect to on the other end, a VPN is useless.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to know more about a technology...nothing at all. But don't get your feathers ruffled when people steer you away from something that isn't your solution.

Linux CENTOS 7 / various Windows OS'es and servers

Hi there
the only SAFE way to use the Internet is NOT TO USE IT.

Now that's totally impractical -however if you create a VIRTUAL machine and only connect to the internet using the VM then at least if the machine becomes infected then you can just delete it and start another one.

I use a VM like this a lot --just a small VM with nothing else installed except Ms Office and IE.
With a decent processor and plenty of memory there isn't any problem running a VM. For this type of application allocate 512MB - should be enough -- even 1GB - probably overkill but if you've got plenty of memory no problem.

These days Web video content will play in a VM as well so You tube etc will work in a VM..
