Very slow internet speeds at home, but not at school on one laptop

    Hello Everyone,

I have a friend who's having issues with the speed of her net at home, on one particular laptop. She just purchased a new Asus laptop not too long ago and while she's at ODU her speeds are fine, when shes home it drops very low. She also has another laptop and desktop that are perfectly fine, and get the top speed their isp provides.

On the problem laptop (the Asus)
Shes running windows 7 64 bit, the router is a Linksys E1200, the network card itself is an Atheros AR9485

Her speeds at home are : 0.52 mbps on the Asus, while her other laptop and desktop gets 33 mbps
Her speed at school is 28 mbps on the Asus

So we are trying to figure out why her Asus wants to act up at home and not at school

it does not sound like a computer problem -- may be a router/wireless/network setting problem--to try to eliminate possibilities...
try plugging the machine into the router directly with a cable--if the speed picks up then there's a setting somewhere that needs a tweak.

Yea, I already had her do that and sure enough it did pick up like normal. So as you said, there must be some settings thats off

these web pages may prove useful--maybe not--but it's something to check--the second link (Article--see 'slow downloads') talks about turning off IPv6--but that may not be an issue since the machine works at school--it is something to check though

Thanks for the help. We found that it needed to be updated, but it didn't show until we did all kinds of resets, but its up to speed now, thank you
