File sharing frustration, Can't connect to share, firewall issues.

Hey so I've been googling troubleshooting and tearing my hair out for close to five hours trying to get one hard drive shared on my pc so the local network can access it. To start off I am running Win7 Ult 64Bit. Using the default windows firewall.

I've followed these steps

1. Right click hard drive (share with -> advanced sharing -> advanced sharing)

2. Checked "share this folder". Set up a share name, Set up permmssions so that everybody has full access

3. Switched to secuirity tab, Added Everyone and set full control

4. Apply - Okay

5. gone to advanced sharing settings in control panel

6. Everythings on. switched off Password sharing. So that other devices can connect freely.

7. Tested to no avail. Comes up with - Windows cannot access //NAME check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. 0x80070035

I have found that the only way to connect is to turn off my firewall as im accessing the share (before it times out) via another device. If i turn the windows firewall off prior to accessing the drive it doesnt show up in the network map. any ideas im done scratching my head and have finally came to ask for help

Update i have also gone into the firewall settings and made sure file and printer sharing setting were in the right order

Most likely which ever anti virus software you have installed is causing this problem.

I've never needed to shut off Windows firewall to share a drive.

Okay so everyone i found out the reason sorry for not getting back to you guys sooner, it was because a DMZ was set up on the network to my pc that was directly stopping fileshares of any kind i turned that off and bam now its no problem. file share is working properly

Yes with DMZ host enabled, it set's up an open port outside the routers firewall which creates an unsafe condition for file shares on your machine. That's why Windows cut off file sharing, it's just a safety feature.

It didn't realize that Windows would do that automatically but it makes sense.

Yes i didn't know at the time it was set up for another reason but as that's not a option anymore ill have to deal sorry for the somewhat useless thread guys. haha at least I learnt something. should have guessed what was causing the file share issue but just didn't think about it at the time.
