    SOLVED - DNS lookup fails, but only in web browsers


    This problem has been solved. If you are having a similar problem and have found your way here from Google or elsewhere, check my success post in this thread for an explanation of how I fixed it. No guarantees it'll fix the problem you're having, but it may at least step you in the right direction. :)

    Greetings. This is my first post on these particular forums.

    I am currently in the process of disinfecting a computer for a customer, it is running Windows 7 64-bit. It was infested with a multitude of malware. The cleanup is still progressing, however I am at a point now where I require a properly working internet connection in order to finish the cleanup process.

    Unfortunately, I have encountered a head-scratcher of a problem. No matter which web browser I use, I cannot load any websites whatsoever. I've tried IE, Firefox and Chrome, they all fail with their respective errors indicating that the DNS lookup for the address failed.

    Now, here's the odd part...it's ONLY the web browsers that this is occurring on. For example, if I open a Command Prompt window and enter "ping www.google.com", it will return the proper IP and respond normally with no errors. In addition, Windows Update is able to successfully connect and download updates with no errors. Whatever this issue is, it seems to affect only web browsers.

    Here are the things I have tried, none of these have resolved this issue so far:
    -Ran SFC to check for missing/corrupt system files. No errors were detected.
    -Reset the TCP/IP stack using the netsh command.
    -Uninstalled and reinstalled the network adapters.
    -Reset Windows Firewall to defaults.
    -Verified there are no suspicious/incorrect LSP entries.
    -Verified there are no suspicious/incorrect HOSTS entries.

    Here's a list of the malware scanners I have run so far:
    -Spybot Search & Destroy 1.62 Portable
    -SuperAntiSpyware Portable
    -Malwarebytes

    And here's some additional malware scanners I plan on running during my continued cleanup:
    -Microsoft Security Essentials (Currently scanning, results pending ETA 1-2 hours)
    -Spybot 2
    -ClamWin Portable
    -Trend Micro HouseCall (Can't run until the internet is fixed)
    -HitmanPro
    -Any additional scanners you recommend

    Spybot, SAS and MBAM were all run from a bootable Win7PE disc, thus I have no logs from them. Here is a log from HijackThis. As I said, cleanup is still in progress, so there's bound to still be some bad entries:

    UPDATE: MSE scan found nothing. I was unable to run Spybot 2 because it couldn't download updates. So, whatever is causing this issue is affecting it too. I will see about manually downloading updates for it later.

    HitmanPro, on the other hand, was able to connect and download updates, so I did a scan with it. It found some stuff and removed them, but this did not fix the problem. The log from HitmanPro is too large for me to C&P here, so I've attached it. BTW, CVCSUtil.exe is a false positive. It's an old program I wrote in Visual Basic many years ago leftover from when I used to put my cleanup tools on CD, and HitmanPro alerted on it because it doesn't have a valid digital signature and is loaded by autorun.inf (All it does is pop up a message box saying where to send the disc if found).

    I have to leave for work in 10 minutes, so I do not have time to do any further scans right now. I'll keep updating this as I finish my scans, and try other methods to repair the network connection.

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

    I've run into this same issue after an infection on an XP box. After days of working on it, I gave up and reinstalled the OS. You might want to just wipe the drive and start fresh.

    Reinstalling Windows is one option, but I'm keeping it as a final option. If it does come to that, I'll probably try a repair install first before resorting to a full reformat and clean install.

    System Restore, unfortunately, is not an option in this case, because either the customer or Geek Squad (The last place this computer was taken for service) disabled it.

    Hi Torindkflt

    Put a check next to all the areas where it's says " file missing " and click fix checked . Restart the PC and see if that fixes your issue if not scan again with HiJackThis and upload the log .

    Try these steps as well

    Click the button
    In the search box, type "CMD" without the quotes
    Under Programs (1) right-click CMD, and then click Run as administrator.
       Tip
    You could even do this press Ctrl+Shift+Enter same result as right-clicking and choosing Run as administrator
    If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password
    At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns
    Then type ipconfig /registerdns and press Enter
    Restart the PC

    I followed the steps you provided VistaKing. Removing the "file missing" entries from HJT did not work, because they come back again, as you'll see in the log below. If I recall correctly, I read somewhere that this is a bug that occurs when running HJT on a 64-bit version of Windows.

    I did the flushdns and registerdns commands, then rebooted. Still, no luck. I'm beginning to agree with UsernameIssues that a reinstall may be the only viable option to remedying this genuinely weird problem. What malware, driver or configuration could allow some programs to resolve DNS lookups, but block others?

    UPDATE: A couple other things I tried were temporarily disabling Windows Firewall and resetting the firewall back to default settings. Disabling it didn't help. When I tried to reset it to defaults, it gave me the following error:

    Googling this error led me to exporting the default firewall policy from a known-clean computer and importing it on the bad computer. Although it did successfully import the policy, it had no effect. DNS resolution is still messed up. Attempting to restore the default settings in the firewall at this point still produces the error displayed above. So, Windows Firewall isn't the cause, but it is being affected by this problem (Cannot restore defaults).

    I've run into this same issue after an infection on an XP box. After days of working on it, I gave up and reinstalled the OS. You might want to just wipe the drive and start fresh.
    After I rebuilt that XP box, I never went back to research just how it is possible to break DNS for some apps and not others. Because of your post, I decided to look into that using W7.

    Caveat:
    The info below could be wrong. It might not lead to any solution. It is just what I've been up to.

    Before making that post quoted above, I used Process Monitor and Process Explorer inside a W7 pro 64bit Virtual Machine (VM) to watch what happens during a ping and when loading a tiny/simple web page from a university. I flushed the DNS cache between each test until I got tired of doing that and just stopped the DNS service (thus no more DNS caching). I'm probably using the wrong tools for the job or I don't know how to use the tools that I have. My guess is that I need to see a trace of the piped communication between processes in order to ferret out how DNS can break for some apps and not others.

    I set up that VM again so that I could show a tiny bit of what I saw. I'm not suggesting that you do any of this on the problematic computer. And I cannot recommend that you turn off a lot of services like I did to halt Windows 7's constant network chatter. (I turned off things related to homegroups, file sharing, SSDP...) The VM was the only computer in its subnet, so that also cut down on the network traffic that it sent out unrelated to the DNS traffic that I wanted to capture.


    In the videos below, Process Explorer's "Difference Highlight Duration" is set for 9 seconds; so the apps still show as still loaded into RAM for several seconds after they have exited RAM. And Process Monitor's display of events will always lag the real events. [Process Monitor's time stamps for each entry take care of that, but timing is not that important here, so the timestamp column is not shown.]

    Notice in this video that cmd calls ping.
    My guess* is that ping queries the DNS service/cache...
    ...when the DNS service finds no cached entry for google
    ...the DNS service (or ping) asks svchost to make an external DNS query:

    *I could have the order all wrong and/or there could be other processes involved.

    With the DNS service turned off, notice that ping makes its own external DNS queries:

    And (as expected) without a DNS cache, new external DNS queries are made for each ping.

    Notice that there are now two external DNS queries just to get that one simple single domain web page. And notice that two different IE instances (process IDs) are involved in making those DNS queries. When the DNS service is turned on, there is probably one external DNS query and one internal (cached) one.

    For the website being loaded in those videos, there was always one parent IE process and two child processes. But when I tested loading this forums index page (lots of domains to be resolved), only one child process was loaded. Maybe the type of page dictates the number of "children".

    Of course, you have to exit IE to get it to forget the DNS info that it has gathered, no matter the source. Simply reloading the website does not cause additional DNS queries that I could see with these tools.

    Looking at your HitmanPro.log you want to remove Ask.com toolbar along with SearchQU Toolbar . Use Revo Uninstaller to remove the items. Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Uninstall Programs Choose Advanced Mode Click Next If it scans for left over items and finds things still int the registry check only the bold items and choose delete once completed click Next and if it Finds more do the same place a check on the items and click Delete .

    To Reset the Browser Settings do these steps

    For Internet Explore

    Open Internet Explorer, click on the gear icon at the top (far right), then click again on Internet Options
    In the Internet Options dialog box, click on the Advanced tab, then click on the Reset button.
    In the Reset Internet Explorer settings section, check the Delete personal settings box, then click on Reset.
    When Internet Explorer finishes resetting, click Close in the confirmation dialogue box and then click OK.
    Close and open Internet Explorer again.


    For Firefox

    Ran Revo Uninstaller as directed. The SearchQU Toolbar was not in the list, presumably my malware scanning has already removed it. I did remove the Ask.com Toolbar, plus a few other toolbars I noticed that, although likely not the cause of the DNS resolution problems, definitely needed to be removed anyway (ShopAtHome, Dogpile, etc).

    Ran HJT in Safe Mode and removed the items as directed. Just like before though, they came right back:

    Finally, I reset Internet Explorer and Chrome as directed. The copy of Firefox I was testing with is actually Firefox Portable, so I just deleted it. If I need it again, I can copy it back over from my own computer.

    Alas, the problem persists. DNS resolution still fails for web browsers and a select few other programs, but still works fine for the Command Prompt and Windows Update.

    I feel, unfortunately, as if the only remaining step is to reinstall Windows...

    Lets see the DNS settings


    Open Network Connections by clicking the button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type adapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections.

    Right-click the connection that you want to change, and then click Properties. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) .

    To specify DNS server address settings, do the following:

    To get a DNS server address automatically using DHCP, click Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then click OK.


    Once you have that done . Open up a elevated command prompt window and type ipconfig /flushdns once you have done that restart the computer and see if you could browse .
       Note
    Click on type in CMD in the search box right click on CMD once it comes up under Programs (1) and choose Run as administrator

    SUCCESS!!

    After doing some more research, I decided to try one last thing. Basically, what I did was replace the Winsock registry entries with copies I had exported from my own known-clean computer, and re-installed the network adapters...it worked!

    As a public service to any future Googlers who happen to stumble across this thread searching for a solution to a similar problem, here is a step-by-step guide to what I did to fix it. No guarantees this will work in your case, but at the very least it may step you in the right direction and give you ideas of other things to try or research.



    First, you will need access to a known-clean system that is running the same version of Windows as the malfunctioning system (In my case, Windows 7 64-bit). It doesn't need to be the same edition (Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, etc), but it does need to be the same general version and bit level. You will also need a USB flash drive or other form of removable storage, as you'll be doing some SneakerNet between the two systems.

    First, do the following on the known-clean system:


    1. Click Start
    2. Enter "regedit" without quotes.
    3. Right-click on regedit and select "Run as administrator". Click Yes if you get the UAC prompt.
    4. Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services.
    5. Locate the "Winsock" key. Right-click on it and select "Export", and save it someplace where you can easily find it.
    6. Repeat step 5 for the "Winsock2" key, making sure you save it using a different name. Afterwards, you can close Registry Editor.
    7. Copy the two exported .reg files to the flash drive.


    Now, take the flash drive to the malfunctioning system, and do the following:


    1. Click Start
    2. Enter "Device Manager" without quotes.
    3. Click on Device Manager. Click Yes if you get the UAC prompt.
    4. Double-click on "Network Adapters" to expand it.
    5. Remove ALL network adapters listed by clicking on them, one at a time, and hitting the Delete key on the keyboard. NOTE: Make sure that "Delete the driver software for this device" is NOT checked.
    6. Click Start
    7. Enter "regedit" without quotes.
    8. Right-click on regedit and select "Run as administrator". Click Yes if you get the UAC prompt.
    9. Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services.
    10. Locate the "Winsock" key. Right-click on it and select "Delete". Click Yes when asked if you're sure.
    11. Repeat step 10 for the "Winsock2" key. Afterwards, you can close Registry Editor.
    12. Restart the computer.
    13. After the computer is restarted, wait for Windows to finish reinstalling the network adapters.
    14. Plug in the flash drive and open it.
    15. Locate the two .reg files you copied from the known-clean system.
    16. Double-click on the first .reg file. Click Yes if you get the UAC prompt, Yes again when asked if you want to continue, then OK after it finishes importing.
    17. Repeat step 16 for the second .reg file.
    18. Restart the computer.


    Provided your problem is the same that I was having, your internet should be working normally now. If not, feel free to post a new message asking for help, the people here are awesome!



    VistaKing, I didn't see your latest reply until after I had posted this update. Both network connections (Wired and wireless) were and still are configured to obtain the IP and DNS servers automatically. I had also already tried flushing the DNS several times during my troubleshooting. Thank you for your assistance, though! :)
