    Windows not allowing access to shared files

    I have a Win7 PC and a Linux machine on a home network. I can see and access Linux machine's shared folders from the WIN7 machine; but cannot access windows PC shared files from the Linux box.

    I have SAMBA on Linux. Both machines see each other. Windows machine sees Linux shared files and folders. Linux machine sees windows machine, but cannot see shared folders. When double clicked, an error message pops saying connection to windows shares cannot be established and cannot mount windows shares.

    It probably has something to do with the Local Policy Security Options.

    I had a similar problem with sharing files with an iMac.

    Have a look at this article on how to get to the Local Policy Editor.

    I would try setting the the LAN Manager Authentication Level to: Send LM & NTLM.

    You may also want to change the "require 128-bit encryption" setting. (to off)

    Hope this helps. Give it a blast and see how you go. :)

    Neither of those worked. I have tried all the LAN Manager Authentication Level options and still no joy.

    windows 7 won't share files to Linux - solution

    I found that just right clicking and sharing does not really share folders. I right clicked and selected SHARE WITH specific people option and selected EVERYONE and gave full permissions. That clicked sharing on.

    Also went to Control Panel, Windows firewall and allowed file and printer sharing, checked both homegroup and public. Linux is treated as public and is not part of Homegroup. clicked advanced sharing settings and checked ON
    1) file & printer sharing 2) Public folder sharing 3) Enable file sharing connections with 40 & 56 bit encryption 4) Turn OFF password protected sharing.

    On LINUX side, I edited /etc/samba/smb.conf and added the following entries: User shopuld substitute tyheir file/share names

    [windows-share]
    path = //windows-pc/sharename
    browseable = yes
    read only = no

    Create an entry for the mount point: sudo mkdir /mnt/lan/sharename
    I then mounted the share in linux:
    sudo mount -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=0222 //windows-pc/sharename /mnt/lan/sharename

    that did it. I am able to see my windows shares in Linux and can even write to them.

    It appears that it was more a problem with my machine than with 7 itself. After reinstalling, it seems that sharing now works.
