linksys WRT600N and Win7 issues

Hi all,
I've recently encountered a problem with my router and internet connection. I have been using Win7 for several months without any issues and then about 3 weeks ago (thereabouts) I did a windows patch. My computer did weird stuff like lagged and then somehow I lost internet connection. It kept saying I didn't have some diagnostic service policy... I ended up doing a reinstall of Win7 which fixed the problem.
However, in the process of trying to find a solution I also did a firmware update on my linksys router (WRT600N) but did not reset the router at that time due to time constraints.
Then...
The internet connect worked fine, no problems/issues. That is until last night. Again, huge issues while playing World of Warcraft. It was from the very start at logon that I noticed the lag. I blamed it on Bliz but as it turns out it was actually on my end. The lag continued within my OS where if I tried to bring up my "computer" to view applications/programs it was extremely slow. I had difficulty shutting the dialogue window down and forget trying to open another application such as task manager. I decided to troubleshoot and in that moment of madness I decided to "reset" the router ( I have powered it down several times at this time). I thought maybe it would allow me to reconfigure the router and network connection. So now I see a "public" network but it won't let me connect, nor can I use the linksys wizard to set the security configurations (192.168.1.1) to set up my router. It seems like Win7 will not allow me to connect to the "public" connection and I cannot find the work around.

I'm at my wits end... I hate to have to reinstall windows but I can't get around to use the "public" connection my computer is seeing. I've tried shutting off the windows 7 firewall.

Any ideas?? (sorry for long post)

A few quick things.
1) Can you fill out your system specs in your userCP this will help us know what hardware you are using.
2) on your WRT600N are you using a wired or wireless connection.
3) what anitivirus software are you using.
4) have you installed all updated drivers for all your hardware

I would do a "hard reset" of your router, to set it back to factory defaults.

I'm using a wired connection, Comodo antivirus and all my drivers were fine until last night when I logged on.

I just want to be sure on this, i dont mean just power cycle the router.

First off when you upgrade the firmware you are supposed to do a hard reset before the firmware upgrade and after the firmware upgrade. A hard reset should be done following the below directions.
**NOTE** Hold the reset button in during this entire process
  1. First 30 Seconds: While the router is plugged in wait 30 seconds.
  2. Second 30 Seconds: Unplug the router but again make sure to continue holding the reset button in.
  3. Third 30 Seconds: Plug the router back in and wait the entire 30 seconds.
The entire process takes 90 seconds and the entire time you have had the reset button pressed.

Following the above procedure will reset the router to "factory settings" meaning it will behave like you just took it out of the box (except that it will still have the newer firmware you flashed it with)

Is this the only computer on your network? If more, do they work fine?

I agree with ccatlett but I would take it one step more. Power down and unplug Cable/DSL modem too. Disconnect, power down, and UNPLUG the computer as well. It is essential to unplug the computer (or set the master power switch on the back of the PSU to OFF) to remove the ATX mandated +5Vsb standby voltages distributed across the motherboard. This voltage is used for the front panel power button, but also to keep some feature alive while the system is powered down, such as "Wake on LAN".

So power down and unplug everything. Wait a couple minutes then power up your cable/DSL modem. Wait a minute then proceed on to the router. Then the computers.

Also can you check in Event Viewer and see if there are any messages there or post a screen shot of them when this error happens.
I agree with ccatlett and Digerati remove all power and test.

Thanks all, I've pretty much followed all the steps you mentioned. I do have a VOIP modem and a hardwired laptop plus wireless laptop in use. Its only happening with the Win7 desktop (its the only machine with win7 os).

I hate to do it but I guess I'll do another reinstall. I can't wait for Oct 22... at least is just around the corner now.

Thanks again!

I don't think it's a Windows problem. Try the Win7 machine via Ethernet and see what happens.
