    Houston, we have ignition!

Well, VistaKing, here's what transpired over the past hour or so.

First, I changed the Device Manager > Other Devices > Properties as you suggested.

    No change re WiFi.

Then I copied the WLAN driver folder over to my desktop. (I was previously installing it direclty from the flash drive, which may not have mattered.)

Then -- and I suspect this is the key change -- instead of running only the Setup and Install application files, I tinkered further and ran another application file titled Install_sw.

Everything else had extracted, but this Install_sw file referenced additional files that needed to be extracted, which of course I did.

Then it ran. Then the WiFi came on. Then I smiled.

Seriously, VistaKing, you were instrumental in making this happen. Thanks for not giving up on me. I probably would have abandoned ship had I been on my own, but with your support I figured eventually we would get it fixed.

    Thanks to torchwood (Roy) too.

I've still got a long ways to go to get this silly thing running like it did previously. Not the least of which is that the default touchpad makes it almost impossible to keyboard decently. I regret that I lost some Samsung specific programs/drivers in this process, but perhaps now with WiFi back on I can track some of them down. I suppose I'd best start with getting Norton 360 reconnected.

In short, we have a bright lad on the west coast assisting a bit of a dummy on the east coast, and the latter wishes to express his gratitude.

Thank you , Lots2Learn for the kind words . I don't give up on people. Glad you got the wifi issue working . I help until the issue is fixed. Now that we have Internet access via wifi would you like for me to have a look at your computer ? Just download teamviewer and PM me the user Id and password .

VistaKing - thanks for the touchpad driver -- downloading now (touchpad is currently brutal to use).

Can I take a raincheck on that teamviewer offer?

My battery went from working fine to not working at all a while back -- no warning -- I expect it's some sort of circuitry problem.

I have hesitated to contact Samsung as I expect it will have to be returned for a warranty repair and I will have to make arrangements for a replacement if it will be gone for any length of time, but will need to follow up on this over the next few days.

Also, I purchased the Windows 8 upgrade but have held off on installing until I get the above referenced repair taken care of. Actually, part of the reason I hesitated to install is because I was not 100% certain I will upgrade to Win 8 but gave myself until the repair is made to decide (upgrade only cost $15 so I'm not out much if I decide to stay with Win 7 -- but I'm guessing I will likely go to 8).

Part of the problem with sending it back for warranty repair is that I'm told they might wipe the hard drive as part of the repair process (I don't know how likely this is -- somebody suggested it). So I don't want to tie up much of your time for nothing.

However, I'm sure I'll be scratching my head over a few things when I turn my attention to getting things in order after the repair and if your offer persists I expect to take you up on it then.

Yes if you do send it to Samsung for repair . They will wipe the drive and reimage ( reinstall windows ) . That happen to someone I know who has the series 9 laptop.

Rain check ? Sure you can I'm here to help .
