wake-on-lan activated : computer keeps waking up by itself

I've set my HTPC to wake on LAN (from magic packet only). However, a few times per day my HTPC wakes up by itself.

Is there a way i can know how it wakes up, which device sent the WOL magic packet ? I really don't understand why it is waking up by itself since i haven't sent the packet...

If you turn the WoL off, does it still wake itself up?

Are there any clues in the Windows Event Viewer?

    Click on the Start button/circle
    Right click on Computer
Select Manage from the context menu

Once the Computer Management window opens...
...expand these trees and look around in here:

I just noticed "powercfg lastwake" says the last wake event was a timer ???

Then is looks like it is a scheduled task waking it up.

I'm not sure how to best hunt thru each task, but the info is in the same management console that I showed in my post above. Expand the tree for the Task Scheduler.

One easier method might be to disable the WOL option in the NIC, if your Network card has this function they will be in the local area network - properties-confugure dialog

they may be named differently but here is a snip of the ones on my NIC, sometimes disabling one of the wake options will still allow the remote wake but stop the local wake

I want to let WOL enabled because i use it to wake my computer with a magic packet.

I have disabled wake-on-alarm in my BIOS and in Windows, but my computer keeps waking up by itself and "powercfg lastwake" says it was waken by a timer.

One thing it may be is a Scheduled task timer related to a windows process, for example The windows Media centre is set by default to check for online media for use with songs, Cover images etc, and I think this has the wake option set - The Microsoft items tend to be set to operate around 3AM so if your wakes are at this sort of time that may be an avenue worth investigating - I actually switch all retrieval options for WMP & WMC off in their own controls so do not have the wake issue - but it could be anything, if the event is at a set time this would make your search through the scheduled tasks a little easier
