That is not a lot of information to go on.

What is the device you are trying to connect?
    Do you have a router?
Are you trying to connect directly to a PC without a router?
Is there a second device (or more) that you are trying to connect to, or is it just the internet you are trying to connect to?

Without a router to direct traffic I believe you will need to use a crossover cable to connect directly to the PC.

However this normally applies to PC to PC connections. I'm not sure what a laser controller device is or why it would not be connected by USB, but if it IS supposed to be connected by Ethernet cable to the NETWORK then that might be the problem too.

Probably a question best left to the manufacturer of the device or their support desk/forum.
