Remote connection, cannot do it!

Hello, I have a rather simple question. How can I remote into my home computer from an outside computer (that is not on my network)? Is that the only thing remote desktop is used for, for comoputers on my network only? I cannot remote in from work, for example? I have tried logmein, etc and none seem to be sufficient. I'd like to know steps in order to do this
