    Setting up router behind another router.


    I have a comcast router set up in my master bedroom closet. We can't move it because thats where the we have the Ethernet cables connect to a panel where it connects to the other rooms. My Tv is wireless and my tv wasn't getting a good signal so I connect another router. So I'm able to get internet on my other router, but one of my applications that require to connect to my computer which is on my second router and another computer hosted on my comcast router can't connect. My computers can't communicate to one another on the two networks but one computer on my second computer can connect to my printer on my comcast router. Any ideas on what to do?

    You need to be sure and disable DHCP on the secondary router, this will make it so only the first router is handing out IP addresses so that all machines are in the correct subnet. This is the reason you aren't obtaining a correct IP from the secondary router.

    You also need to run the Ethernet cable from the LAN port on the first router to the LAN port on the secondary router. Don't use the WAN port on the secondary router as it's only for connecting to a modem.

    Okay I did what you said and now I'm on the same subnet as my fist router. but how do now configure my secondary router?

    On the second router I'll assume you turned off DHCP

    In order to get into the second routers set up page so you can set up the access point,..>Look on the DHCP list or IP list of the first router, find the IP address that relates to the second router then just type in that IP into the URL of your browser as per usual. This will get you into the secondary routers set up page.

    You can also use a static IP for the secondary router, might make it easier to find but DHCP works fine. I use DHCP reservation to keep track of the IP assignments on my main router.

    You can use the same SSID, security and password as the first router or use a different SSID works either way but using the same settings will make roaming seamless.

    my first router isn't listing an ip for my second router or none that I can see. When I attach a wireless usb adapter on my computer and did an ipconfig /all and looke for my usb adapter info it says that the gateway is the same as my first router but I have it connected to my second SSID.

    Well the gateway address of the second router is no longer used when DHCP is turned off, which is problem #1. You can read it there in the link I posted. :) The first router needs to assign an IP to the second one before you can access it. This process sometimes takes awhile.

    The ipconfig's from all machines should show the default gateways as being 192.168.0.1 or 1.1. Which ever the first router is using.

    Remember to plug them in LAN port to LAN port, not LAN to WAN, just like you were connecting another switch, easy mistake to make.

    You should maybe post the ipconfig/all here so I can have a look.

    ya I have it plugged in the LAN ports, but I still can't find the ip address for the second router. On the online ip list I can't even find the MAC address for my router but on the offline list I see the MAC address and its assigned to 10.0.0.16 but its offline.

    Just asking, but would a 5 port switch or hub be an easier choice ? I see used ones at thrift stores for 3.99 to 5.99

    I believe the Op requires another wireless access point Doc Brown. You can't just plug those in without disabling DHCP etc. :)

    The connections showing in the ipconfig aren't helping me much, both the Ethernet and the wireless are connected at the same time for some reason, and then a virtual box is tossed in for good measure but none of this really tells me anything about the secondary router or it's IP address. It should be in the 10.0.0.1 range, not sure why it would show up as offline but we need get in there to set up the access point.

    This is pretty much standard procedure for setting up an access point but only using gateways in the 10.0.0.1 range instead of 192.168.x.x, but you need to be able to perform the setting changes on your end, the link I posted also explains the process but I really can't do the hands on part from my end.
