Cannot connect to WinXP file share folder

Win7 does not prompt me for a username/password for a directroy I am sharing on an XP computer.
...yet if I try to connect to a fellow Win7 computer, it does.

What can be the issue here?

    Hello,

First off, I'd verify if Workgroup with files/printer sharing is setup correctly.

Thanks... but they were set up correctly. I've accessed this network folder in the past and now it doesn't work. The XP machine just sits there, so no one has been on it messing with any settings.

So I have to assume its some setting on my windows 7 computer that no longer allows me to use a usrename and password to access the shared folder. It just tells me I don't have access without allowing me to attempt to log in.

The shared folders on my XP machine that allows "Everyone" to access it works fine.
But for the files that require a username and password, I cannot access because I get no login prompt.

If it was working before, you may try a System Restore first on the Windows 7 computer. You would choose a date when things were problem free. If it didn't work, you may try the same procedure in XP computer.

If System Restore didn't help, please give us an update and we'll move on to the next tasks of troubleshooting.

I just tried to access the folder from a third machine (running XP) and it was prompted a username and password, once entered, I got in fine.

    Definitely a windows 7 issue

    I'll try a system restore.

Okay WTF... seriously? I just connected using \\IPADDRESS and I got in perfectly fine to the shared folder.

Why is it a different result (access denied) if I select the PC's name in my network list?!!?

That's usually a DNS issue, check your router's DNS'es if you are using your ISPs. Power cycle your devices, it might help. Restart both computers as well. I use either computer name or IP Address and it doesn't bother me which one I use.
