I disabled the firewall. Now the Windows Network Diagnostics tells me that "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. Any further ideas?
Thanks.

The reason why your wireless doesn't have a IP is cause its not connected to any wireless networks .
Can you open up command prompt click on the button type CMD inside Search programs and files and press Enter
Type this command
ipconfig /all > %Userprofile%\Desktop\IPconfig.txt
Upload the IPconfig txt file should be located on your desktop
I have to say that I'm lost now. I don't really understand how networks work. What do I do next?
I know I can manually address, subnet mask + default gateway in TCP/IPv4. The default gateway is blank but I can get a default gateway from my roommate who is connected to the network. Is it the same for me? And I don't know what DNS server to input.
Lets take a look at something
Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type adapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections.
Right-click the Wireless connection , and then click Properties. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Click the Networking tab. Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) , and then click Properties.
Make sure these are chosen
- Obtain an IP address automatically
- Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then click OK.
Lets go ahead and uninstall McAfee and restart the PC then install MSE . I think your McAfee is stopping you from doing things . Use Programs and Features to remove McAfee and then use MCPR.exe to double check if its been removed

Hi VistaKing. Thanks for all the help so far.
I am about to uninstall McAfee and see if that solves my problem.
Before that though, I have a new window that pops up first thing in windows upon start-up. It's for Cisco Systems VPN Client 5.0.07.0290 and it says: The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. I believe it started popping up after I ran the AdwCleaner yesterday. Any idea why and if this affects my ability to connect to wifi?
I uninstalled McAfee and ran the the removal software.
The problem of not being able to access the internet still remains
I also still get the pop-up window for the Cisco Systems VPN Client. It asks to provide an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "vpnclient_setup.msi". Not sure if this is relevant.
try this
Go to network sharing center and manage adapters (left panel)
Disable Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection 2
I recently updated my Bluetooth drivers and a new connection showed up for Bluetooth (it's acutally a combo adpater for 802.11 and BT).
You might also look at this post in this threadWireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection 2:

As I understand it, the Virtual Wifi is used to create ad-hoc network to use as a hoptspot. Not sure why it showed up on my PC, but stopping and disallowing it worked for me.
Cisco Systems VPN Client is usually used for enterprises to get to their domain away from their work PC . If you don't use VPN you may uninstall it under Programs and Features
Click on the start button type Programs and features hit the <ENTER> button locate the Cisco Systems VPN Client . Click on Cisco Systems VPN Client and hit uninstall .
