    how can I bring back a server-share to a win8-notebook?

    i have a new win8-notebook connected to a workgroup-ethernet-network via router,to which a windows [version unknown]-server is connected and 6 other clients,2 of them macs,4 xp-pcs.

on all machines,3 other machines resp shares are constantly visible in "network places":
    1 the server-share
2 a client-1 share (which has no internet access)
    3 a client-2-with-internet-access-share

    the notebook gets internet via the wall-plugged lan,from a router-plugged DSL-router.

all issues mentioned here are not dependent on which lan-wall-socket is used.
(there are 3 in each room)

    there is no wlan-accesspoint.

    issue:
the notebook is _not _seeing_ (not in net places, and not forceable) the server-share_, despite the fact, that the share has been used before to install a bigger client-server software, which worked.

    first appearance:
some day someone tried to access a lan-wall-plug-connected printer for printing, which at that time could be seen in network places,as then could the server; after which… _both_ disappeared.
unfortunately, above said client-server-sw is not working anymore on the notebook.

how can I bring back the server-share to the win8-notebook?

Can I ask, What are the sharing permissions set as on the Windows server as these will need to be set as the same groups found on local machines since you said that you are connected using a workgroup rather than a domain. Also, are you able to ping the windows server at all?

Could you open a command prompt and type the following:

    Code:
    net view
Is your server which has the inaccessible share listed?

    Many Thanks,
    Josh

firstly I have to say, that permissions might not be the issue, because THE NOTEBOOK HAD FULL ACCESS TO THE SHARE FOR ABOUT THREE DAYS. then, after a try to access the network-attached printer, the share "vanished", only to come back as a "multimedia" (see below) a day later, when it was again connected to the network.

to 1: as far as I can say, permissions on the server are set to "public",brecause all xp clients can see it and read and write files to the share regardless of a specific "workgroup",because some of them are not even set to any specific workgroup at all.

to 2: not only is the server "pingable" with a correct response, but also it is listed under "network places" as a "multimedia" -device/server/"nas"-I-presume. that does not help a bit, because when I try to map the servershare with drive "Z:", the folowing error occurs: (from german) "the indicated server can not execute the indicated task".

I hope this brings some light into the matter, although it certainly does not into mine!

i'm not sure, what you're asking, but in my mind a "workgroup" is to be looked at basically as a pool of users, who will have the same rights in a network system and can for that purpose be treated equally and summarizingly by an administrator. you don't have to have a password/account to be part of one.

in this system, several computers are in the same workgroup, the above said notebook included; others are not in any specific workgroup at all -as noted- and are seeing/owning/mapping the share despite that fact, because it is a "public" one.

It may be prudent to join and ask here: Windows 8 Forums
Have you used win 8 to join your network/workgroup?

I recently posted the question under the below mentioned new windows 8 forums link
and had to post an end-of-thread note there, only because the problem did not
show up again, not because of any special _explainable_ reason.

there are still issues, but see for yourself:

    >how can I bring back a server-share to a win8-notebook?

to all that posted answers resp further questions here, I remain deeply grateful.

If I ever stuble upon the real reason of the issue, i will post to the above thread. thanks!
