How can I connect to XP from Win7 via Remote Desktop

Then I connect to the work computer from home using remote desktop(both computers were on XP.The RD works fine untill I changed my home computer to Windows 7)

XP can only be upgraded to w7 by doing a fresh install so your VPN connection would need to be reconfigured. Has that been done?

Don't know if this will help at all or not. And I don't really understand how this helps, but I read on another site that updating the video drivers would help. I didn't think so but had tried everything else. My scenario is slightly different in that both machines were on the same network (behind the same firewall). Used to be able to remote to XP machine from another XP machine, after installing Windows 7 could not connect to XP machine. All settings were right (virus scanners, firewalls, remote connect settings). So I ran Windows Update on both machines, making sure that the video driver updates were included. After reboot, connects with no issue.

Before when I tried to connect the progress bar would show for a half a second then disappear, then nothing. No other messages or warnings.

So if you want to give it a shot, again don't know exactly why this would work, but it seemed to do the trick for me. Call me crazy if you want.

I feel his issue is one with the work network VPN setting. Going from Xp to Windows 7 would render some changes to his machines. Eg Xp does not have ipv6 configured. I heard from people that ipv6 can cause issues with VPN.

I would say double check with your work network admin to see if there are any restrictions or setup needing to be changed for you cos you are no longer on Xp rather W7.

Successfully pinging a machine does not mean you can RDP to it.

Btw, have you checked your Services on W7 to see if any Services that needed to be start that hasn't?

yeah, all I need to do is to sign on the VPN software so that the two computers are in the same Lan network. I suppose that's been done properly coz I can ping the office computer with no problem.

This morning at work I tried to connect the XP PC using my colleague's laptop(which is on Win 7 and both machines are in the same lan network), unfortunately this time the remote desktop works fine, so I guess it's not about windows update. But I'll give a try when I go back home from work.

Open the remote desktop client. click OPTIONS and it should slide open, click the ADVANCED tab, and then under Server Authentication make sure it says WARN ME or CONNECT AND DONT WARN ME and that its NOT on DO NOT CONNECT.

This is a security setting that verifies the remote computer via Kerberos, and if its set to DO NOT CONNECT and it can't verify the identity of the remote computer then it refuses the connection.

Sorry for the late response Jordus,I just read your post. yes I did set it to WARN ME. The progress bar shows up for 5 minutes, then it says "connection failed, please contact administrator of blah blah".

Thanks aem. this morning i found out that i can connect to the XP machine from my colleague's laptop(which is on Win 7 and in the same lan network).

I suppose you are right, I'll try connect using my colleague's laptop from a different network just to make sure.
