Not fishy really. Most likely one of your neighbors installed a wireless on the same channel. Instant troubles! To get to setup, enter the address of your router in the address bar of your browser. Most likely it will be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. A sign in box will come up. It will ask for the name and password you used to set it up. Don't know? Grab your manual from the modem or look up the manual on the web. It will tell you the default name and password for your model. With that in hand, press and hold down the small reset button on the rear of the modem until the lights flash on the front. (about 15 sec). Now you can log on. Do not to forget to assign a new password on the modem. There will be a wireless setup. Try not to get carried away with changing default settings.

I forgot to mention that you may have to hook an Ethernet cable from your laptop to the wireless router for this to work. You can unplug it when you finish.

    Hi Rhodo

I think the procedure you mentioned is for installing the modem, in which case I have done all that; I also have reset the modem numerous times...and no result.

I just want to know about the "channel" you mentioned before, how do you change this? Could this be a problem then, that my neighbour recently set up internet using the same channel as mine and therefore conflicting often, therefore causing lots of dcs?

Well, changing the channel IS part of the modem setup. On the wireless setup page there should be a pull down box for the channel. And yes, you can lose signal intermittently from interference. It also takes a minute or two to get back up. Look at it this way... If several devices all start having the same problem at the same time, then how can it be your computer? Your computer is just another device using that same signal. That leaves what?

I would suggest to do a "ping "local default gateway IP" -t" and let it continue and when you disconnect check if the pinging is still success. If it is you know the problem is not the computer.

If the ping does timeout you should try to do a reset on the router and restore you computer to a earlier point when the network still worked.

    Thank you rhodo32

Well, you are true that several devices all start having the same problem at the same time...however, to make it clear, perhaps I should say that its not just the main computer. Its my internet basically, THAT AFFECTS my main computer...my phone....my laptop...

So when you say several devices are having the same problem, you are partly correct, because all my devices (main comp, laptop, phones, etc.) are all connected to 1 modem.

EDIT: Sometimes, if I recall correctly, when absolutely no one is using the net, it disconnects by itself. This is when nobody, nobody is using the net.

EDIT2: tomerello, how exactly do you do it? I apologize I am not so good with computers.

Apologies if I take long to reply. That means the internet is disconnected. lol..

Restoring your computer makes no sense at all. You also could have a bad cable from the modem to the wireless, or the connection coming into your router. Try moving them around and watching the blinking lights on both devices.

The channel setup is usually on the same page as the wireless password, encryption mode, and IP assignments. I don't know what brand you have. I have encountered this problem before. Usually in apartment buildings. Some modem brands are a lot better than others. NTL, I have to leave the computer for a while. Good luck.

I have changed the channel from AUTO to 1. Yes there are 11 in total.

My modem and wireless is 2 in 1. This one device I have is my modem, router and wireless.

So far nothing has worked...I will be trying to fix it, while waiting for your answers.

THank you for the help so far

Try other channels. Your wireless should be near the center of the coverage area. Also, walls and other objects in the way will reduce the signal strength. Objects placed in a nearby closet can reduce the signal. The possibilities are 1. weak signal, 2. signal interference, or 3. a faulty cable signal. It has to be there somewhere. Your wireless is a transmitter to all your devices.
