Since changing one of my pc's to win 7 I'm now trying to connect that one to the workgroup that my other 2 NT pc's are on, as I believe I cannot connect them to a Win 7 homegroup, advice gratefully appreciated
You won't be able to connect them to a Homegroup - although this is just a clever GUI front end for accessing a lot of features that are already available in previous Windows versions*.
You should just be able to put your Windows 7 PC in the same workgroup as the NT machines, and providing file sharing etc is all set up properly, there will not be much difference between Windows 7, and whatever you replaced with it.

Right sorry, but let me get this network figured out in my head. You have a few machines in a workgroup all running XP SP3 and are trying to connect a Windows 7 machine to the same workgroup for file sharing etc?
Thats about it, the xp machines can see each other but they cannot see the win7pc and it cany see them.
I assume that on the Windows 7 machine the location is set to either Home or Work, and not public?
In Control Panel of Win7, Network and Sharing Center, top left. Click change advanced sharing settings. Click the dropdown arrow for home or work.
Turn on network discovery. Turn on file and print sharing. Turn off public folder sharing, unless you want this for some reason. Use 128 bit encryption. Turn on password protected sharing.
Make sure that there is a password set and active for the Win7 user account. Reboot if necessary. Machines all should see each other now.
On Win7, start menu search box, type services.msc, hit enter. Make sure computer browser, workstation, network list service, network location awareness are all set to Automatic and are running.
Go on an XP machine and open a command prompt. Type net view, hit enter and see the goods.
