hi guys, just in case anyone else needs help with this...

i had a real nightmare. ive tried all sorts of things.

im rdp'ing into a windows 2008 r2 datacentre server from win 7.

i have a hp network printer.

it wasnt being picked up by rdp for local printing.

the way i got rdp to actually discover the printer (so it comes up as hp printer redirected) was to change the port type on the local computer from the hp autodiscover type to an tcp/ip type port and put in its ip address, (and then fix the printers ip address in the dhcp settings in the router). once i had done this, rdp picked up the printer. this didnt actually solve the problem for me though. but it might help someone else with a different printer. i dont think rdp can see these autodiscover ports which are very common these days. i think its to do with netbios resolution, for which there is a setting on the remote server, but as i couldnt change that as im not the admin of it i couldnt try.

after trying everything on this thread (particularly the print pooling, which worked for about 5 minutes and then stopped the local and remote printer working) and spending hours on it, i gave up and i got round the whole problem by using the one note printer. rdp had already picked this up. when printing to the one note printer (redirected) from the rdp console, it worked fine - i could then go back to my local machine on which one note had popped up with the document in it. i could then just click print using the local printer.

i know i havent got to the root cause of this, but i hope this helps someone if they get really stuck.

How does local drive sharing in Remote Desktop work?
I was wondering how the local drive mapping in Remote Desktop works. I use it because it's very convenient, but I'm concerned about the privacy of it, i.e. that other people might see this drive as well. I need to be absolutely sure before I'm going to continue using a mapped drive.
