Intranet File Copy Issue - Win 7

Hello all,

I am having an issue copying files greater than 1mb across out network, however, I can download a file of any size off the internet.

Here's the situation:

I have a Windows 7 32 bit (have also tried 64) machine that is trying to copy a 16mb file from another Windows 7 32 bit computer, on our network, but at another physical location. The files is NOT being copied through a server. I can copy a 550kb file no issues from this location. Any file under 1mb will copy okay, anything over 1mb will not. It will come up and say it has lost connection to the network. I have covered the majority of basic and advanced troubleshooting (that I can think of).

This would seemingly point towards hardware being the issue, however, I have tried a total of 5 NICs.
Two of the mainboards being in totally different computers, Dell RMAd the first one because of this issue, both are base Win 7 32(or)64 bit Dell Optiplex 7010s.

I have tried four different mainboards in total, all the same.
I have tried a PCI NIC in each of these boards, same thing.
I have tried same/different network ports, same/different cables, VPNs, different remote locations.
I have tried a known working Win 7 64 HDD from an identical Optiplex 7010 in the original machine, and the replacement, network copy still does not work.
I have taken the HDD from the original machine, and the replacement machine both and put them in an identical Optiplex 7010 I have and they copy just fine.
I have tried it on numerous active directory profiles, through safe mode w/ networking, etc.

I've updated/flashed BIOS, rolled back and updated NIC drivers, tried 32 bit and 64 bit versions. I've tried the duplex speed settings, jumbo packets, etc.

I am a bit confused here guys.. not sure what the issue could be if it is not hardware.

Any help or advice on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

You didn't mention anything about the type of router being used in this network but this problem seems more central rather than PC based.

Please reference my original post, would you guys still think this to be a router/switch issue even with me being able to copy this file fine from any other PC on my network, whether XP or 7 (around 100 in total)? Not to offput your expertise, however, I do not know if that honestly would be worth looking into.

I downloaded and tried Teracopy, and it has succesfully moved this 16mb file.. Over a 56k frame connection it sure takes a while, but it did succeed. Any further ideas based on the results of Teracopy working and Win Explorer copy not?? I'm really at a loss here fellas.

It seemed like you already covered any possible network hardware or PC issue with your trouble shooting.

Is this problem only when you try to move files to the same network but at a different location? Are you using a VPN for the other location?

Yes it is. Our routers are not that individualized however, standard DHCP with users seperated by VPN. I have 3 other XP machines and two other 7 machines on this VPN that can copy from the other network.

I think for a more advanced network, static, or the like, you guys would certainly be on to something with the MTU sizes.

So the problem seems confined to the Dell OptiPlex machines only?

You mentioned working with the network adaptors Advanced settings > "I've tried the duplex speed settings, jumbo packets, etc., Have you tried turning the IPv4 Checksum offload to disabled?

"Just this one" The original users PC had this problem, as does every main board/NIC I put in that PC, as well as the RMAd unit from Dell. All our PCs are Optiplex's and this is the only one with the issue, which led me for a while to believe it may be an issue with their active directory profile, but I tried them on the PC in the next cube and it worked, brought that PC to his cube and it worked. I have set the offload to disabled.

The one working Optiplex 7010 we have I used as a template and made sure all of its settings were identical to the problem child PC, they were. These two PCs were purchased from Dell on the same day about a year ago, identical to even coming on the same pallet. I've also messed around with netshell stuff, i.e. netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel = disabled and the like.

Now with Teracopy working, but right click Windows copy not working.. I'm even more puzzled.

Replaced the board and still the same problem, but only on this particular PC. That has to be frustrating.

I might be inclined to either update the bios or at least clear the cmos then check the bios settings out including the date/time etc., Maybe check the Op system files using the sfc/scannow command and I'm sure you have tried reinstalling the Op system, Windows updates etc.

Here is something I have seen work with fixing Windows 7 & copying issues over a network.

Apparently you need to tell Windows that you want to use the machine as a file server and that it should allocate resources accordingly. Set the following registry key to ‘1′:
