Sharing issues between W7 & XP

So, the same image that I was having the local GP issues with I am now encountering another issue.

Two machines on a network, one W7 and the other XP.

-I cannot browse from the W7 PC to XP PC

-I can browse to the W7 PC from XP PC
-I can telnet between the two
-I can ping from one to the other
-I can use VNC to connect from one to another

-There is the same local admin user on both machines
-I have disabled firewall - made no difference

The error simply states \\*pcname* not accessible.

    Anyone any ideas?

For workgroup networking the most common problem between XP and Vista and later OS is that XP uses the workgroup name MSHOME while on Vista and later it has been changed to WORKGROUP. Right click on My Computer and check the work group names. Make sure they are all the same.

Also it's good to fill out system specs, including what networking you are talking about wireless/wired etc..

    It is not the workgroup.

Do you really need system specs for a permissions issue? I can provide if you wish though.

It's always s good idea to post the spec. If you have another issue, the specs show just by clicking the link that's always at the bottom of your posts. Saves people searching and lots of guessing.

Also you don't say if it's a wired network or give any details. I'm not clairvoyant. I can only go by what you write as I can't look in your machine.

edit: what works best for me is using the already shared folders. All Users on XP and Public on W7. They are already shared so you don't have to worry you made a mistake when sharing a regular folder. If you can't see them, there's something wrong other than folder permissions.

After messing about with this for the past week - I've finally found the solution to my permission issue.

When Deploying the MDT image the Task Sequence was set to Apply the default recommended security settings.

So I simply logged into MDT, Edited the Task Sequence and disabled the 'Apply GPO Pack' setting. All permissions issue then disappeared with any new images deployed. Everything works fine - big sigh of relief!!

I have also outlined the fix for this individual issue I had. It may be useful for end users having this issue who obviously cannot edit images etc.

*Regedit – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters and change requiresecuritysignature to 0*
