I stumbled across the DNS Benchmark webpage and liked what I read . I ran the DNS Benchmark program to find the fastest reputable DNS servers and subsequently changed my TCP/IP protocol properties to "Use the following DNS server addresses:" from "Obtain DNS server address automatically." I also changed "Obtain an IP address automatically" to "Use the following IP address" and entered my DSL modem default IP addresses for IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway. I didn't notice any faster website surfing. I did notice after several subsequent reboots that I was accumulating errors in my Windows Logs related to the network. So, I changed the IP address and DNS address items back to the default "Obtain automatically" setting. All the Windows Log errors didn't appear anymore.

My ISP is Verizon DSL, so your mileage may vary.

The lesson I learned was that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

ofccourse all the logs error dissapear -you have the dhcp enable and you should never have to change the -optain an Ip automatically - instead you should use the first two ip to and paste them to use the following dns - ussually there is no visible prove that the speed increase ,but the answer - means the most near server you can access more faster.Don't forget also to change the QOS limit bandwith -going from 20 to 0

I'd like to add my two cents in here about the DNS Servers. As someone who messes around a lot with networks, due to being in a Cisco CCENT class, I'd have to say that I suggest using Google DNS or OpenDNS over anything else.

My local ISP uses their own DNS servers, which are poorly maintained.

    Google DNS IPs

    OpenDNS

I use OpenDNS on my personal server network, and GoogleDNS on my home network.

Can you comment more on QOS limit bandwidth?

    Thanks for the reply.

I changed just the DNS IP addresses in the TCP/IP Properties on my network connection on my desktop to the Google DNS. I'll watch the Windows Logs for errors or warnings.

Please explain the QoS settings. I see an upstream and downstream on my DSL router page.

Is just changing the settings on your desktop or laptop network connection sufficient?

I also checked my Verizon DSL modem webpage, @ http://192.168.1.1/, and I noticed there were different DNS IP addresses configured. In order to fully take advantage of the DNS IP address change, don't you need to change the configuration settings on this gateway?

How do I find the modem IP address to make changes if necessary - like the DNS?

Do an ipconfig /all and look for your Default Gateway and DHCP Server IP address under your Ethernet adapter information.

Then type that IP address into your browser address. My DSL provider is Verizon. I get the DSL modem or Gateway setup page where I can view status and change settings.

    I hope this helps.

ipconfig /all gives me the configuration information for my router not the cable modem.

In my case, my router and DSL modem are one and the same. Do you have a separate router and modem?
