Viewing network share over wifi freezes laptop

    Hi,
This is a strange one. I have an Acer netbook, Win7 Starter, which will access the internet fine, and which will view share folders on the LAN fine. But if I open up a share folder and view its contents in explorer, the machine will freeze within ten seconds.

Using ethernet, there is no problem.

I've updated drivers. Acer only had version 14, but the Intel site had version 16. This is an Intel N 100 wifi card.

I also swapped cards from another same model Acer, with no change.

The card's settings seem fine. File sharing is turned on on both machines. I'm not even framing the why's of this problem very well at this point.

    Hi there,

How big is the file that you are trying to transfer using Wi-Fi connection? Have you tried a smaller file?

Doesn't even get that far. Just viewing folder contents freezes the machine.

Have you tried using a different computer and see if you can replicate the issue?

I'd also try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network to test out....

    An update will be nice.

Yes, I can access the share with no problem from other machines.

How are you accessing the shared file?

Have you tried the IP Address of the computer instead of a computer name? I.e. \\192.168.0.11\SharedFolder\

No. As it says, I'm using explorer to access the share.

Please try the workaround that I have suggested to see if it makes any difference.

Have you also tried this suggestion?
I'd also try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network to test out....

    Hi,
My apologies for not getting back sooner. My work load has been heavy and I haven't had any more time to give to this machine as of yet. I think your suggestion is a good one. It seems to me that it would isolate the GUI (not sure that's the best word for the layers above the actual network interface) as a factor. Will do that if I get the chance, and report back. Thanks again.

Ok, I found the problem. I checked my notes and saw that there were other freezes too, though not fatal. I replaced the wifi card and all the problems are solved.

    Thanks again.
