Apparently this can be done using the parental controls.
Access the Parental Controls feature in Windows 7 to limit a guest account by clicking “Start" then “Control Panel.” Then, click “User Accounts” and under that panel, click “Parental Controls” then follow instructions to set up a “Standard” or guest account.
Follow the prompts on how to limit the new guest account using the parental controls. Using this parental control feature, you can limit access to certain activities such as how children or guests use the computer and connect to the Internet, hours spent online, types of programs run and file access, but the account must be a “standard” account to do so.
I don't believe you can prevent access to a particular drive this way but you can prevent access to all drives for a standard user on the same machine.
You can also prevent access to certain drives using Group Policy.

I have another way of preventing access to a particular drive by a particular user on another machine but it involves setting up a Homegroup.
hey chev, thanks for the input ... you've given me some avenues that seem to directly answer my query! thanks for that wholeheartedly :)
i'll be back to report!
ps: i'd like to award chev the kudos deserved, but I can't see on this forum that there's any provision
hey chev, sorry about the delay. I clicked the scales; you have my respect :) gratefully appreciated...
the parental controls weren't enough unfortunately --- I can't deny the standard user access to certain drives [just as you said] so i'm taking a look at preventing access to all drives [the standard user only uses facebook and web email] so that may be the go!
i'll be back to report [hopefully shortly]...
:)
oh, I meant to say: same machine :)
aaaand i'm reading your initial reply again...
:eyeroll:
nup! no go my friend...
it may be something entirely different!
I want to restrict access to c drive and 2 external drives --- all on the same machine.
separate profiles, same machine, I have a guest, I would like them to have access globally, just not locally!
surely there's a way!
