Help setting up network in a recently purchased house

Hello all,

I have recently purchased a seven year old house and am having some problems setting up my wired network. I found this forum when searching on Google for this problem, which linked me to a similar thread that was solved: Ethernet port in wall not working... This thread helped me understand my problem a little more, but am still not able to get my network running.

I am successfully able to hook up my wireless connection by connecting my modem to a cable outlet in my living room and then hooking up my router to that, but I want to get my ethernet wall outlets to work as well. From my understanding in the last thread, I should be hooking my modem up in my closet where it looks like all of the ethernet connections in the house come together (see pictures below).

There were 4 ethernet cables plugged into the hub and a few that were unplugged. There are also three or four unplugged coaxial cables in there as well. I thought that one of those coaxial cables would plug into my modem and then I would hook up one of the unplugged ethernet cables into the modem to send to the hub to give internet to the rest of the house. I've tried plugging all of the coaxial cables to the modem and the modem lights show that it isn't receiving anything.

Looking closely at the first picture, I'm also a little alarmed that a few of the coaxial cables that are plugged into the hub seem to be cut off while still leaving the connector screwed in. Is this bad?

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be as descriptive as possible. Thanks in advance for the help!

Does anyone have an idea on how I might be able to set this up? Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

I would ask the cable company to set it up - which they do free of charge, at least around here. There are too many cables for a layman.

That's probably a good solution. I have Comcast and I feel like I remember them mentioning that it would cost something to set it up, but it doesn't hurt to check in with them. Good idea - thanks!
