Cannot share files between Windows 7 PC and Windows 8 PC

    Hi,

I'm trying to share files between my two computers, I have changed the sharing permissions on a folder on my Windows 7 machine thinking I could then access those files on my Windows 8 machine, but for some reason it's in a different homegroup and under networking it cannot see this computer at all.

On the Windows 8 machine I have also shared a folder, with the intention of copying the files from the Windows 7 computer into there, but whilst it shows up under Networking, it says it is not accessible.

Also, I've just removed my Windows 7 machine from a homegroup trying to join the Windows 8 one, but now all it says is a homegroup can only be created on a home network, even though I have set the network type to home.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, I've only ever setup shares on XP before (also the work network, without the homeshare thing) and it's super, super simple - any idea what I'm doing wrong please?

    Thanks

Also, on the Windows 7 PC, whenever I try to turn on network discovery/file sharing it just loses the settings and turns off again.

Also, I can connect to other network devices (ie my girlfriend's Macbook) from either computer... it's only the two Windows machines that cannot see each other

(although it's running Plex server, which I can see fine from this machine... argh)
