Windows 7: Ethernet Connection Lost (and Found?)

Hi guys, are you all experiencing the same errors i am in the Event log? "Name resolution for the name (random website here) timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded."

One person in the 50 page thread mentioned this, and the reply was that this was because his ISP does not support ipv6 so to disable it. I've done this, and the problem persists.

Motherboard/NIC: Gigabyte X58 Extreme / Realtek 'RTL8168D/8111D'

Wired or Wireless: Wired

CPU Architecture: x64

Upgrade or Clean Install: clean

Driver details: default windows 7 driver

Problem description: intermittent losing connection, like the rest of you. Not losing total connection, torrents continue to upload, but losing IRC / windows live messenger / browser connection.

Am i the only one that has a dead network adapter when i install the realtek driver upgrade that Windows Update gives you? When i install that i lose ALL connectivity, it just bricks the whole thing.

I have a new MESH preinstalled with windows 7. .

Motherboard/NIC: ASUS P6T SE
Wired or Wireless: Wired
CPU Architecture: LGA1366 Intel X58 / ICH10R
Upgrade or Clean Install: Clean
Driver details: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Problem description: If I turn my back on the PC for more than half an hour I see that the LAN connection has dropped
Solutions or Suggestions: It gets better if its nudged. But very irritating nonetheless

Motherboard/NIC: Gigabyte P55M UD2/Realtek RTL8168D/8111D
Wired or Wireless: Wired
CPU Architecture: x64 Core i5
Upgrade or Clean Install: Clean
Driver details: Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family GBE NIC (NDIS 6.20)
Problem description: After Windows Update did it's thing, network connection was lost.
Solutions or Suggestions: Driver Rollback fixed it.

Functional driver in use now is version 7.002.1125.2008 - this is the one that came with Windows 7. No problems whatsoever with this - I've 'hidden' the Windows Update version to stop it being installed again.

I had also done a clean install on my mother's P4 based machine a couple of days earlier with the same result - also a Realtek NIC. I found that uninstalling and then 'scanning for changes' fixed the issue - sort of - this needed doing every re-boot. Of course, after I had done that once, there was no option to then 'Roll-back', as the 'newly installed' NIC only ever used the newer (malfunctioning) driver.

Her symptoms were that the comp could now see 2 networks, both unidentified, and neither with internet access. I could access the router's pages but get no further.

I used a spare wireless dongle to get her on-line, but even that had problems as I had to install it using compatibility mode (vista driver) and then it wouldn't work if the network was set to 'Home', only when I set the network to 'Public' did the connection remain stable. (the wired connection wouldn't remain stable, whether Home or Public was used.)

  • Motherboard: Asus P5K SE/EPU
  • NIC: Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller, built into the motherboard
  • NIC Driver: v.2.4.7.29, 10/13/09, installed by Windows Update. I don't see any newer ones around.
  • Wired or Wireless: Wired
  • Router: Linksys WRT54G2
  • CPU Architecture: Core 2 Duo E8500
  • Upgrade or Clean Install: Clean
  • Problem description: Every time I start a backup to my Windows Home Server from this computer in Windows 7, the connection drops almost immediately. I disable and re-enable the adapter, and it comes back. Other network usage is fine. This adapter works fine in Windows XP on the same setup. Switching to my other ethernet adapter, an add-in card identified as "ADMtek AN983-based ethernet adapter", works fine.
  • Solutions or Suggestions: For me at least I think this is a driver problem.

Same here, it's not completely fixed but it's not as bad as the newer ones.

Xello, where in the event log are you seeing that error? I'm having the same symptoms as you are where open connections continue to function but new connections cannot be created until reboot.

Updating to that Windows Update Realtek driver did not brick my NIC. All drivers seem to have the same functionality for me.

But in the event that it is a DNS resolution issue maybe this has more to do with Windows 7 and less to do with the network drivers?

Same problem here with an nForce adapter, except rebooting or re-enabling the adapter solves nothing. I've tried numerous drivers with no luck. I've also disabled IPv6, side scaling, autotuning. I'm beginning to think this is a Windows 7 problem. This is what I've found in Event Viewer: "Name resolution for the name _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.seini.digitalcable.ro timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded." where seini.digitalcable.ro is my DNS suffix.
"Name resolution for the name images.google.ro timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded."
If someone has a solution for my problem, please post it. Thank you!

I'm thinking that this could be rather another result of the problem and not something that will help us locate the source of the problem, it could just be a generic message telling us that our connection to a server was timed out. It's -why- I am timing out that i need to know

I'm seeing the DNS error in my event viewer, too. Here's one: Name resolution for the name photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. They happen for different sites, randomly. I can go for hours without a drop, then two might happen close together. My local network seems OK but I can't get out to the net, and "no internet access" is shown in the network center. I wait about 60 seconds and connection returns by itself. never had these problems on Vista. not total loses of internet connectivity. This definitely seems a Win7 issue.

EVGA motherboard, X58 SLI LE
onboard Realtek NIC RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E GBE NIC
Win 7 Home Premium x64 (upgrade from Vista Home Prem x64)
Netgear MR814v2 router

Tried OpenDNS servers on my router and in Windows, now going back to ISP DNS servers.

  • Problem description: Random disconnects during heavy NIC usage
  • Solutions or Suggestions: This is my first post in these forums, so i hope it ends up being a useful 1 . After pretty much trying EVERYTHING from multiple different forums, I ran into one person suggesting a solution that worked for him. It involved "DISABLING", RECEIVE SIDE SCALING in the advanced tab under driver settings. This seemed to work for me...so far. It used to disconnect within 2-3 minutes at full 1.5 MB/s. Now I'm over 3 hours at full 1.5 MB/s, while streaming to my media center PC, and while engaged in random web browsing with no disconnects or interruptions of any kind. (This is also with the newest drivers from nVidia). Good luck, hope it works for you guys,
