Maybe I do not understand your question. Smartphones access the internet usually thru 3G or 4G. Verizon seems to have the best 4G coverage which is pretty fast.

    It depends on your "carrier".

I think that the OP is asking about a setup where a computer is tied to a cell phone. "PC Suite" is used to let the cell phone be a network adapter on the computer.

I use PdaNet on an Android cell to do this. For me, the limiting factor is the tower that I happen to be connected to and the time of day.

Before the tower that I'm hitting now was "upgraded", 4g had 8Mbps.

You are right. The OP might be talking about WiFi tethering and hotspots.

I'm using a Samsung with Android right now (as a fallback since my ISP doesn't wants to work). It works quite good so far using its 3G network. Unlike Nokia, it doesn't needs to install any crapware software on the PC for it to work, just install the driver on the PC (Win7 downloads it automagically if it has internet access from somewhere else, otherwise download from Samsung), enable USB modem in the phone and it's working. Tried and working in Win7 SP1 and XP SP3.
