    Sorry but I have managed to generate some huge confusion here.
    When testing VPN, client has no router. Connected directly wirelessly to BTOpenzone.
    Client used normally on LAN with addresses 192.168.1.x

    in an attempt to unravel the mess, I have set up both PCs as they will function under the VPN and connected the VPN

    I tried (elevated command prompt)
    IPCONFIG /RENEW ALL On Client and server it says Operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissable for this operation.

    I now have to go out for rest of afternoon. Will reboot both PCs, set up again and post IPCONFIG /ALL

    Thank you for your continued patience and help

    OK So I have started again.OK.
    The steps

    1. Router. Switch off. switch on.

    2. Server (connected to router and hence to SKY broadband). reboot.
    Disable firewall
    Computer/Network name PONDER
    IP = 78.86.160.148
    RAS Dial In interface shows Work network
    Incoming connection TCP/IP4 properties properties (IP6 unticked)
    Allow callers access - ticked
    Assign IP automatically - ticked
    Allow calling computer . . . unticked
    use default gateway on remote computer is ticked

    IPCONFIG /ALL (see below)

    3. Client (wifi connection to BTOpenzone broadband) NOT connected to LAN
    IP = 217.39.13.68
    Edit VPN so hostname = 78.86.160.148
    tcp/ip4 says obtain IP4 and DNS address automatically

    Connect VPN
    VPN Connects Work network. No Internet access

    IPCONFIG /ALL (see below)

    Try to map network drive to \\Ponder\share - cant find
    Try to map network to \\78.86.160.148\share - cant find
    try to browse but only get local shares.

    NOTE When the VPN is connected, the computer loses its internet connection (presumably because it thinks internet is coming via the VPN and not via BTOPenzone?)

    So actually you did Virtual Private Network (VPN) - Enable Incoming VPN Connections on server. "use default gateway on remote computer is ticked" is not a server setting as far as I know. Please explain

    Client pings
    192.168.1.61 OK
    192.168.1.67 times out

    re Use default gateway = My mistake - this is on the client not the server
    I have unticked this. Internet access on the client (when VPN connected) is restored.
    No change to the ping results
