    OK. So sharing and Homegroup work between computers without NetBIOS but NAS requires it. My main point was to demonstrate that a network consisting of Windows 7 or later computers does not need NetBIOS. On the other hand there's no harm done when it's enabled. A relic from the past.

    Why does blocking NetBIOS with the firewall cripple the Homegroup and sharing?

    I have no idea.

    Logically, firewall with NetBIOS blocked should block sharing only when NetBIOS is enabled.
