Is there somthing that will tell me what is getting on the net?

Every now and then I come to my computer and the hard drive is going crazy. And something is on the network. However the second I touch the mouse all activity stops. Hard drive goes back to normal and same for network. Before we all go jumping in the virus boat I have already done scans with mbam avast and the such. Infact I suspect avast might be doing it as it is always trying to update itself. But there lies the problem I DONT KNOW. So is there a little program that i can turn on to monitor my network and what is accessing it? It will need to be based on history as the second i try to investigate what it is it turns off.

    Thanks

Edit: The more i think about it this the more i think it should have gone in the security section instead of the network/sharing section. If it needs to be moved my apologies.

That behavior sounds more like the disk indexing itself when the input activity to it is low. Have you checked that?

Search indexing is a high possibility. However, what business does it have being on the internet?

Here is what i plan to do. I would like to disable search indexing TEMPORARILY and see if that solves the problem. If it does solve the problem I would like to leave it off because things that play with my drive and use internet make me a little paranoid. Also i don't ever search my computer with the search bar so there is really no benefit to me anyway.

Are there instructions on how to do this? Right now im searching bing and they want to make it sound complicated.

    Thanks.

Indexing has nothing to do with networking/internet. I think you might be a bit too paranoid about that.

Just open up Windows Task Manager to see what is doing this.

Task manager dosent show me "what" is using the net or hdd other than something is using it.

Rescource monitor however does tell me what programs are using the net/hdd.

    Thanks
