    There is no such restrictions placed on the Mac address.

    I had exactly same problem on 2 of my laptops. Solved with changing Channel from 12 to 5 on my WiFi router. If you don't have access to the wireless router or what ever is broadcasting the WiFi, you may be out of luck. Or I don't know if there is setting on your Laptop's wi-fi adapter that you can adjust to be able to see different channel.
