    actual download speed,

Hi, am new to pc workings but can anyone tell me, if I have a download speed of 4.5Mbs(speedtest.net) when downloading a programme or any file from internet, the actual speed shows as under 500Kbs, is this about right? Have read ultimate router guide, but got lost at port forwarding. Thanks.

Hi Newbytinkerer, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Assuming you made a typo and you mean 500 KBs instead of 500 Kbs (highlighted in the quote above), that's about the speed you can get.

It's simple conversion: 4.5 Mbps (Megabits per second) = 550 KBps (Kilobytes per second), the key here being the difference between a capital B (byte) and small b (bit).

Regarding download / line speeds, each Mbps gives you roughly 122 KBps (1 Mbps = 122 KBps). One byte is 8 bits so dividing the Mbps with 8 you get the same speed told in KBps.

Hi, Kari, thanks for reply, I understand. I probably did type in error, I tend to mix my Bytes and bits, which may account for some of my ills, will check next time I download. Thanks again.

You are welcome. It is quite confusing this with ISPs announcing your line speed (and speed tests showing it) in Mbps whereas your download manager or browser shows it in KBps.
