Cannot start Homegroup because p2pimsvc won't activate.
I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops that were all in a Homegroup under win7 Home 64 bit. I recently upgraded all to win 7 Professional 64 bit.
The 2 Laps and 1 desk ended up with a service file of PEER Name resolution, Peer Networking Group and PNRPsvc. All work fine and can connect in a group together.
My main desktop ended up with p2pimsvc instead of Peer Name Resolution file, which will not start. I get a message saying "failed to read description. code 1006". The other 2 files failed because they are dependent on p2pimsvc. My Homegroup setup is dependent on all 3 working.
Through research I have come to the decision that p2pimsvc and Peer Networking Name are interchangeable with different titles and perform same function.
How can I correct the problem that stops p2pimsvc from starting or to delete it and add PEER Networking Name? I have tried the suggestion of C\windows\serviceprofiles\localservice\networking\++++ but the networking is not there, only Microsoft.
I have tried the cmd sfc\scannow and got a message stating that I must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility. I am signed on as an administrator but do not know what a console session is.
I can try any help offered and if it is over my head I have a tech friend to do it. He has looked at it a little already but is baffled on how to change the service files without more knowledge. They are all set to automatic.
There is another file which also failed to read description but does not seem to be related, Policy Agent.
Any help will be much appreciated. Mahalo.
