I just tried this too. It said

"Ping request could not find host msn.com. Please check the name and try again.

IN order for the ping to possibly work you need to do the ipconfig /flush and ipconfig /renew that Airbot suggested

then do the ping

thanks

Ken
Ok, so I retried it and what showed up was

Pinging msn.com [207.68.172.246] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 207.60.172.246:
Pacets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

When I first installed Win7 RC about a month ago I experienced similar symptoms as you did. Updating the network driver to the absolute latest resolved this problem for me.

edit: yet another thought: Any chance the proxy settings were enabled in both FF and IE?
I already tried updating to the latest network driver, but it said mine's already up to date. and no, the proxy settings are not turned on for FF and IE

Hmmm... it seems as if DNS is working, otherwise the ping wouldn't even translate the URL to the IP address and fail right away. How about running a trace route to MSN?

At the same command line, type "tracert MSN.com" (without the quotes) and post your results.

edit: Wait a second - I, too, on FiOS am receiving a timeout when I ping MSN.com. It seems as if the trace route is showing a failure midway to that IP address. It appears that one or more points along the way are configured to ignore ping requests.

Solution to Bonjour default gateway 0.0.0.0 problem

I had this same EXACT same problem. DNS was working, but the default gateway was messed up.

Try this:

1) Open a command windows (Start -> cmd)
1) Type ipconfig. Under Default gateway does it say:
Default Gateway . . . . .: 0.0.0.0
192.168.0.1 (or something similar)

If the first IP address listed for the default gateway is 0.0.0.0, I think I can help you.

The problem is that Bonjour is starting up before DHCP has returned the default gateway from your router. So, Bonjour (the Apple zero-configuration networking product) is messing up your Windows network by setting the default gateway to 0.0.0.0. Then when the default gateway is set by DHCP, it just adds the real default gateway (192.168.0.1 or similar) after 0.0.0.0. Then, guess what? Your internet connection won't work!

So, you can either manually fix it the way Microsoft recommends:
The Default Gateway may have been set to 0.0.0.0 on a Windows Vista-based or later OS running Apple’s Bonjour service
but this is a pain and you have to do it often. Try telling your spouse or kids that they need to do this every time there is an internet connection problem.

Or, if you really want to fix the problem, instead of manually correcting it every time it happens, do this:
1) startorb->computer (right click) -> manage
2) click "Services and Applications"
3) Click "services"
4) Find "Bonjour"
5) Right click "properties"
6) Change "startup type" to either "Automatic (Delayed Start)" or "Disabled"
Automatic (Delayed Start) works for me.

What this does is it keeps Bonjour from configuring the network parameters until your router has had a chance to configure your network parameters.

If this works for you great! Then you have to ask yourself:

1) Did Apple do this on purpose???

2) Why can't Microsoft figure this out and get rid of the "automatic" option for Bonjour and just keep only the "Automatic (Delayed Start)" option???

Good luck. Post if it works.
